Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the attitudes of nursing and medical students toward older people in Turkey. Method: This was a cross-sectional and comparative descriptive study. The Turkish version of Kogan’s Old People Scale was used to evaluate attitudes toward older people among 618 students. Results: Medical students showed more positive attitudes toward older people than nursing students. Students who were females, whose economic income was less than expenditure, and who were not interested in working with older people after graduation showed less positive attitudes. Conclusion: The results suggested that positive attitudes toward older people exist; despite this, it is obvious that more efforts are required to enhance these attitudes. Implications for Practice: Revision and improvement in curricula are needed to enhance the attitudes of students toward older people, and lecturers in schools should further consider the need to prepare students for their roles as caregivers for this particular group.

Background: Obesity is an energy metabolism disorder which results in the excessive storage of fat and may also lead to physical and psychological problems. Since the 1980s, obesity has drastically increased across all age and socio-economic groups around the world. Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the risk factors affecting obesity in students in the age group of 6-15 years. Patients and Methods: This was a population-based cross-sectional study on 868 students in Bahçelievler elementary school in Zonguldak, Turkey from March to April in 2010. Data was collected using demographic questionary forms and weight-length measurements. Results: The median age was 10.3 ± 2.1; 47.6% of the children were female and 52.4% of them were male. About 70.2% of the students consumed fast food. It was identified that 67.1% of the students in the 6-10-year age group and 32.9% in 11-15-year age group were obese (P = 0.000). The obesity prevalence of children with one or two siblings was higher than the ones with more than two siblings (P = 0.001). Conclusions: The study concluded that there were certain criteria related to development of obesity during a specific period of childhood and taking certain precautions could be effective in preventing it.

Background: Umbilical cord infection developing subsequent to bacterial colonization is one of the outstanding reasons of newborn mortality and morbidity in underdeveloped and developing countries Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the influence of sponge and tub bathing methods on umbilical cord separation time in full term babies in Turkey. Patients and Methods: This quasi-experimental and randomized controlled study was performed on 100 healthy term newborn babies and their mothers. One-hundred full-term babies (51 sponge bathing, 49 tub bathing) born at a state hospital between 14.03.2013 and 18.05.2013 with gestational age of 38-42 weeks, weighing 2500 grams and above and met the selection criteria were included as the study sample. Two booklets were prepared about sponge bathing and tub bathing. Mothers were instructed about sponge bathing and tub bathing, umbilical cord care in prenatal and postnatal periods. The first postnatal visit was performed at the hospital. Home visits and telephone calls were continued until the day of cord separation. Number, percent, mean and standard deviation values, qui-square and Mann-Whitney U tests were used for data assessment. Results: The time of separation of umbilical cord in babies who were given sponge bathing (6.1 ± 1.4) was shorter compared to those given tub bathing (8.3 ± 2.5) (P < 0.005). Conclusions: Since wetting of umbilical cord during tub bathing delays the separation of umbilical cord, sponge bathing is recommended for newborns until the umbilical cord falls off.

Amac: Bu calisma, ates sikayeti ile acil servise getirilen cocuklarda ates olgularinin degerlendirilmesi amaciyla tanimlayici olarak yapilmistir. Gerec ve Yontemler: Tanimlayici kesitsel tipte arastirmadir. Arastirma, 1 Şubat-1 Mayis 2014 tarihleri arasinda Kadin Dogum ve Cocuk Hastanesi Acil Servisi’nde gerceklestirilmistir. Arastirmanin orneklemini belirtilen tarihlerde arastirmaya katilmayi kabul eden 112 cocuk ve ebeveyni olusturmustur. Veri toplama araci olarak 17 sorudan olusan anket formu kullanilmistir. Veriler yuz yuze gorusme teknigi ile toplanmistir. Bulgular: Acil servise getirilen cocuklarin, %54.5’inin erkek, %52.7’sinin 0-3 yas arasinda oldugu; annelerin cocuklarin atesi yukseldiginde, %76.8’inin doktor onerisi olmadan antipiretik ilac verdigi, %54.5’i ise cocuklarinin giysilerini cikarttigi; acil servise ates sikayeti ile getirilen cocuklarin tibbi tanilarinin, %47.3’unun solunum yolu enfeksiyonu, %18.7’sinin tanimlanmamis ates oldugu belirlenmistir. Acil serviste %58.9 ile alin bolgesi ates olcum bolgelerinde ilk sirada yer alirken, %52.7’sinin ates degerlerinin “37.1-38.0” derece olarak belirlenmistir. Acilde ilik uygulama yapma ile acile basvuru sirasinda olculen ates degerleri ve acilde ates olcmek icin kullanilan ates olcum bolgesi ile acile basvuru sirasinda olculen ates degerleri karsilastirilmis olup aralarinda istatistiksel olarak anlamli fark bulunmustur (p<0.05). Sonuc: Acile yuksek ates sikayeti ile getirilen cocuklarda ates olcum degerlerinin cok yuksek olmadigi gorulmesine ragmen, evde anneler ve acil serviste saglik profesyonelleri tarafindan antipiretik kullanim oranlarinin yuksek oldugu gorulmustur.
