Library Collections Acquisitions & Technical Services | 2001

It is broadly acknowledged that effective serials management supports and requires a close link between the staff in technical and public services. More recently, new technological opportunities combined with changes in library organization and administration have greatly facilitated this linkage. The nature and structure of a library’s organization can aid in and benefit from this connectedness. Departments in the University of Louisville’s public and technical services areas began a cooperative effort to maintain serials records in the online catalog in the early 1990s. With reorganization in the late 1990s, a new team structure emerged which further facilitated this effort. In return, this cooperation and the tools that it has created support the teams in a new user-centered approach to serials management.

Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to describe several stages in a university librarys approach to providing access to theses and dissertations, culminating in a decision to use CONTENTdm and its Dublin Core‐based metadata along with our ability to provide even wider access in the future through OCLC.Design/methodology/approach – The universitys treatment of theses and dissertations, from paper through a homegrown electronic system through CONTENTdm and beyond, is recounted in this paper.Findings – Electronic open access to theses and dissertations increases their usage; a digital management software package streamlines their management and presentation.Practical implications – Proprietary software has advantages over home‐grown approaches to digital library content.Originality/value – This paper updates the findings in earlier articles about the use of CONTENTdm for ETDs and the use of OCLC services for metadata harvesting.
Microform and Imaging Review | 2010

Hundreds of thousands of stereographs were produced in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and many found their way into libraries, museums, and archives. Because of their ubiquitous nature, most libraries with an image collection probably have at least a few stereographs. For decades these images sat isolated in the institutions to which they belonged. Over the last ten years, libraries, museums, and archives have increasingly made their photographic collections accessible via digital collections websites to researchers around the globe. Many institutions have chosen to digitize, catalog, and make their stereographic image collections accessible online. The University of Louisville Libraries’ Photographic Archives holds almost two million photographs in a variety of collections. Like many other educational institutions, the University of Louisville Libraries has digitized several of these photographic collections, one of which is a collection of stereographs. This paper explores the University of Louisville’s stereograph collections, describes some of the challenges inherent in creating metadata for the University of Louisville’s collection, examines the metadata currently available for stereographs found through OAIster, and makes recommendations for developing metadata describing digital stereograph collections.
