Inthisarticle,theauthorsbuildonempiricaldatafromtheongoinglongitudinalresearchproject Signsoflanguage(2008–2018)toexaminehowmultilingualchildreninaprimaryschoolsettinguse metalinguisticresourceslinkedtoseveralwrittenlanguages.Groundedinsocialsemioticsanddrawing onnewersocialperspectivesonmetalanguage,theauthorsfocusonaresearcher-generatedactivity designedtoinvitethechildrentoreflectonlanguageandliteracy.Intwoparticularinteractions,they explorehowthechildren“engagewiththemeta”bynavigatingbetweendifferentlanguagesandsign systems,andhowtheiruseofmetalinguisticresourcesinareferentialsenseisinextricablylinkedtoa dialogicallyformedandperformativenegotiationofsocialidentityandsocialrelations.Thus,adopting ametalanguagingperspective,thisarticledemonstrateshowmetalinguisticstatementsaboutlanguage arecloselyinterwovenwithanongoingproductionandnegotiationofthecommunicativesituation.
