Improvements in knock control

The aim of this work is to develop an improved method for knock control in gasoline engines. This should enable higher power output compared to existing methods of knock control without raising the level of knock probability. An analysis of a known knock controller shows, that information about distance to knock limit is not used in knock control. Based on this analysis a design of a new knock controller is developed. This controller uses cylinder-pressure signals to estimate the distance to knock limit and to control ignition angle. An improvement in power output is proven using engine tests.

Abstandsbasierte Klopfregelung in zylinderdruckgeführten Steuerungen für Ottomotoren

Im Beitrag entwickeln die Universitat Rostock und die IAV GmbH eine Idee, die Klopfregelung fur Ottomotoren zu verbessern. Das neue Reglerkonzept soll eine erhohte Drehmomentabgabe des Motors ermoglichen, ohne dabei die Klopfstarke und Klopfhaufigkeit zu vergrosern. In Abgrenzung zu den konventionellen Ansatzen wird hier versucht, mit Hilfe von Informationen uber den Zylinderdruck den Abstand zur Klopfgrenze abzuschatzen und damit den Zundwinkel moglichst nahe an der Klopfgrenze einzustellen, ohne sie zu uberschreiten. Das Verbesserungspotenzial dieses neuen Regelungsverfahrens wird mit Hilfe von Messungen an einem Motorprufstand nachgewiesen. Die in diesem Rahmen entstandene Promotion erhielt den Hermann-Appel-Preis 2007 der IAV GmbH.

Distance-based knock control in cylinder-pressure guided engine control

The University of Rostock and IAV GmbH introduce a new approach to optimize the knock control in gasoline engines in this paper. The new knock controller permits a higher power output of the engine, without raising the level of knock probability. In contrast to conventional approaches, information about cylinder pressure is used to estimate the distance to knock limit. The ignition angle is controlled very closely to this limit without exceeding it. The resulting improvement in power output is proven using engine tests. The PhD thesis containing this work was decorated with the award “Hermann Appel Preis 2007” founded by the IAV GmbH.
