Espécies de Baetidae (Ephemeroptera) do Sul da Bahia, com descrição de uma nova espécie de Paracloeodes day

Lucas R. C. Lima; Frederico Falcão Salles; Ulisses Pinheiro; Edilane Quinto

Based on collections in five municipalities from southern Bahia, a new species, Paracloeodes quadridentatus sp. n., is described from Brazil. It can be distinguished, among other characteristics, by the presence of three, often four, well developed denticles on the tarsal claws, a characteristic that has never been found in other species of the genus. Besides the description of the new species, the following 14 taxa of Baetidae are recorded for the first time from the State of Bahia: Americabaetis alphus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, Americabaetis labiosus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, Aturbina georgei Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, Baetodes sp., Callibaetis sp., Camelobaetidius francischettii Salles Andrade & Da-Silva, Camelobaetidius lassance Salles & Serrão, Camelobaetidius sp. 1, Camelobaetidius sp. 2, Cloeodes cf. opacus Nieto & Richard, Cryptonympha dasilvai Salles & Francischetti, Spiritiops silvudus Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty, Waltzoyphius fasciatus McCafferty & Lugo-Ortiz e Zelusia principalis Lugo-Ortiz & McCafferty. As this is the first survey of Baetidae from Bahia, and it was restricted to the southern part of the state, sampling efforts in other areas are extremely required and should increase considerably the number of species, or even genera, reported from the state.

Sponges as substrata and early life history of the tubulariid Zyzzyzus warreni (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa) in the São Sebastião Channel, Brazil

Carlos Campos; Alvaro E. Migotto; Ulisses Pinheiro; Antonio C. Marques

Abstract The hydroid Zyzzyzus warreni is usually found in shallow coastal waters forming aggregations of solitary polyps embedded in demosponges. Early life history transformations and settlement responses by the actinulae of this hydroid were studied in the laboratory using 13 species of sponges and 2 species of algae collected in the São Sebastião Channel (Brazil) as substrata. The absence of oral tentacles and mouth in the actinulae and early events of metamorphosis suggest that these larvae are unable to spend long periods in the plankton and attach quickly near conspecifics when a preferred substratum is encountered. The time required for settlement and the number of elicited settlings indicated four settlement responses: (a) frequent and short-time settlement, in actinulae exposed to Halichondria cebimarensis, Mycale angulosa, M. aff. americana, M. laxissima (skeleton) and Tedania ignis; (b) moderate and delayed settlement, in actinulae exposed to Aplysina caissara, A. fulva, Haliclona melana and M. microsigmatosa; (c) no settlement, in actinulae exposed to Suberites aurantiacus and to the algae Hypnea musciformis and Sargassum cymosum; and (d) lethal response, in actinulae exposed to Amphimedon viridis, Aplysilla rosea, Dragmacidon reticulatum and M. laxissima. These responses indicate a considerable degree of species discrimination by the actinulae and are consistent with substrata used by the hydroid in the natural environment.

Two-Winged Cloeodes in Brazil: New Species, Stage Description, and Key to South American Species

Fabiana Criste Massariol; Lucas R. C. Lima; Ulisses Pinheiro; Luciano Lopes Quieroz; Leandro Gonçalves Oliveira; Frederico Falcão Salles

Abstract The present work, based on material from northern, central-western, and northeastern Brazil, contributes to the knowledge of the two-winged Cloeodes Traver (Ephemeroptera: Baetidae) in South America. Two new species, C. maracatu, sp. nov. and C. spaceki, sp. nov., are described, the former based on nymphs and reared adults and the latter only on nymphs; the male and female imago of C. auwe and the female imago of C. redactus are described. Based on these findings, an updated key for South American nymphs and male adults of the two-winged Cloeodes is provided.

New Genus and species of Heteroxyidae from Brazil (Axinellida: Demospongiae: Porifera), with a revised identification key for the family

George Garcia Santos; Ulisses Pinheiro; Eduardo Hajdu; Rob W.M. Van Soest

Alveospongia sinuosclera gen. nov. sp. nov. is described from shallow-waters off Canavieiras (Bahia, Brazil). The species bears an unusual morphology, combining saccular or alveolar, evenly perforated habit, and sinuous spiny microrhabdose microscleres. This sponge is tentatively classified within the Heteroxyidae Dendy (1905), on the basis of its confused choanosomal architecture of styles, and possession of spiny microrhabdose microscleres. Assays to generate DNA sequences from this material were unsuccessful. We emended the diagnosis of the family to include species bearing saccular/alveolar shape, microrhabdose acanthomicrostrongyles and styles/strongyles with modifications at the ends. The proposed new genus is compared to the remaining heteroxyid genera, as well as Crella (Crellidae), Batzella (Chondropsidae), Goreauiella (Astroscleridae) and Sceptrintus (Podospongiidae). A revised key for identification of Heteroxyidae genera is provided.

Biodiversity of freshwater sponges (Porifera: Spongillina) from northeast Brazil: new species and notes on systematics.

Gilberto Nicacio; Ulisses Pinheiro

Systematics and distribution of freshwater sponges is still poorly understood worldwide. This may be due to the scarcity of records, and the limited information about morphological traits used for taxonomy. Brazil has reportedly high species richness in the Neotropical Region; however, this diversity is likely to be significantly underestimated given that there are still many unexplored and poorly sampled areas, mainly in the north and northeast regions. We present here new locality records and taxonomic notes on three families and ten species of freshwater Porifera from northeast Brazil: Metaniidae (1), Potamolepidae (2) and Spongillidae (7). A new species of freshwater sponge is described here (Ephydatia caatingae sp.nov.). Additional notes on the systematics and biogeography of most of these species are also presented.

Two new cleistocheliferous species of Clathria of sciophilous habitats from Northeastern Brazil (Poecilosclerida: Demospongiae: Porifera)

George Garcia Santos; Ulisses Pinheiro

We describe two new species of Clathria (Microciona) Bowerbank, 1862: C. (M.) crassitoxa sp. nov. and C. (M.) trairae sp. nov. from Paraíba State (Northeastern Brazil). All are sciophilous species and are represented by small fragments removed from the substrate. Both new species have cleistochelae, and are compared with their cleistocheliferous congeners, differing from all of them by the possession of different combinations of other megascleres and microscleres.

Cladocroce caelum sp. nov. from the Brazilian coast; first record of the genus in the South Atlantic

George Garcia Santos; Lícia Pires Da Silva; Adélia Alliz; Ulisses Pinheiro

Haplosclerida is characterized by the possession of diactinal megascleres, most commonly oxeas in isodictyal arrangement. While the sizes of spicules may be an important characteristic to identify species the skeletal architecture serves to discriminate families and genera (van Soest & Hooper 2002). Cladocroce Topsent, 1892 is characterized by the presence of multispicular fibres tracts with a rather dense subisotropic reticulation in between (De Weerdt 2002), currently with 15 valid species (van Soest et al . 2013), only three of which are from the Atlantic Ocean, and none from the South Atlantic. Here we are record a new species of Cladocroce for Brazil for the first time. Specimens were collected during a faunistic survey conducted in the area of Enseada dos Corais Beach (Pernambuco State, Brazil) and Baia da Traicao (Paraiba State, Brazil). The present contribution takes the number of valid described species of Cladocroce to 16.

Representações sociais dos moradores da Baía de Camamu sobre o Filo Porifera

Loyana Docio; Júlio César Castilho Razera; Ulisses Pinheiro

This study established a profile of social representations by inhabitants in three locations in Camamu Bay (state of Bahia) of the Phylum Porifera. Among other reasons, the focus on Porifera is due to its significant biomass ascertained in the bay regions migration phenomenon and the lack of research on these animals in education. The methodology used was based on social representations because when knowledge is (re)built from experience of a location with a characteristic profile is compared to scientific knowledge, it is possible to draw perspectives for Science education, such as the epistemological obstacles to the learning of scientific concepts. Sixty semi-structured interviews were carried out, twenty in each place (Ilha do Contrato, Barra Grande, and Ilha dos Tubaroes). The gath- ered data was organized into categories that outlined a profile of knowledge that includes characteris- tics such as seasonality, animism, behavior, classification, physiology, and anthropic utility.
