Contact and Prejudice Between Germans and Turks: A Correlational Study

Ulrich Wagner; Miles Hewstone; Uwe Machleit

The reported study investigated the relationship between prejudice and intergroup contact for German and Turkish pupils (age 15 years) in the Federal Republic of Germany. A distinction was drawn between “opportunities for” and “real uses of” contact, operationalized using path analysis, and hypotheses were tested concerning the way contact in the neighborhood, at school, and in leisure time is related to prejudice. As predicted, leisure time contact was significantly correlated with reduced prejudice, but only for the German sample (N = 60); for the Turkish sample (N = 50), prejudice was unrelated to any of the measures of contact. The results are discussed in terms of the wider social background to contact between national and migrant labor populations in Western Europe.

Absolute configuration of in situ transition metal complexes of ligating natural products from circular dichroism

Jadwiga Frelek; Zsuzsa Majer; Anna Perkowska; Günther Snatzke; Ioncho Vlahov; Ulrich Wagner

Abstract Cottonogenic in situ derivatives of potential ligands with different transition metal complexes containing 2 or 3 metal atoms have been used for the purpose of 1) obtaining CD-bands from non-absorbing compounds, and 2) to force flexible molecules into one preferred conformation. Natural products whose stereochemistry can be investigated in this way are e.g. acids, glycols, amines, aminoalcohols, diamines, peptides and nucleoside derivatives. From the Cotton effects the absolute conformations or even absolute configurations can be obtained with the help of empirical rules.

Abstract Methods for the removal and the oxidation of the lipid moiety of the antibiotic moenomycin A have been studied. Combined with biochemical studies, the results demonstrate that antibiotic activity is closely related with the integrity of the lipid unit.

Conformation in the solid state and in solution of (9R, 10R, 21R,-22R)-9, 10, 21, 22-Tetramethyl-9, 10, 21, 22-tetrahydro-7H, 12H,-19H, 24H-dinaphtho-[1, 8-f, g: 1′, 8′o, p][1.4.10.13]- tetraoxacyclooctadecin

Jacek Grochowski; Barbara Rys; Pawel Serda; Ulrich Wagner

Abstract The helical conformation of a new, optically active heterocyclic system 1 in solution has been determined from CD spectra by application of the exciton coupling theory. The molecule in the crystal adopts a conformation possessing an approximate 2-fold axis, with naphthyl groups nearly coplanar. Absolute configuration at four chiral centres as determined unequivocally by X-ray anomalous scattering method agrees with the known configuration of the starting (R,R)-2,3-butanediol. The conformations in the solid state and in solution are compared with those resulting from AM1 calculations.

Conformational analysis of methylsuccinic acid by 1H NMR spectroscopy and circular dichroism

János Rétey; William E. Hull; Feliska Snatzke; Günther Snatzke; Ulrich Wagner

Abstract The pH-dependence of the 1H NMR and Circular Dichroism (CD) spectra of 2-methylsuccinic acid was investigated. Both spectra undergo dramatic changes between pH 4 and 6, where both carboxylic groups become ionized. From the coupling constants of the tertiary proton with the assigned1 diastereotopic methylene protons, it is concluded that below pH 4 the syn-clinal (2) and above pH 6 the anti-periplanar (1) conformation of methylsuccinic acid prevail. The diesters of methylsuccinic acid also assume mainly the syn-clinal conformation (2). The pH-dependence of the CD spectra is discussed in terms of conformation and/or ionization effects.

The absolute configuration of the orsellinate of armillol; application of the coupled oscillator theory

Dervilla M.X. Donnelly; Judith Polonsky; Thierry Prangé; Günther Snatzke; Ulrich Wagner

The absolute configuration of armillol as shown in (6) was determined by applying coupled oscillator theory to the strong negative circular dichroism (c.d.) couplet of (7), utilizing the published atom co-ordinates obtained from X-ray diffraction.
