3. A. Madhaviah 1872 -1925: An Assessment

a gratifying pace but earlier writers have been ignored. The recent monographs on the Kerala writers, edited by Aiyappa Panikker, are to be welcomed in this context. Among Tamilnadu writers that deserve an evaluation is A. Madhaviah, author of a novel, Thillai Govindan ( 1908) and two volumes of short stories, Kusika’s Short Stories ( 1924). His stories reflect his times, and since his times are already three generations behind us, we can be more objective, perhaps even kinder, than the preceding generations who were probably too close to Madhaviah’s generation to be sympathetic to his prose style or content.
