Acquisition of the Domain Structure from Document Indexes Using Heuristic Reasoning

Mikel Larrañaga; Urko Rueda; Jon A. Elorriaga; Ana Arruarte

Domain Module is essential for many different kinds of Technology Supported Learning Systems. Some authors have pointed out the need of tools that may develop the domain module in an automatic or semi-automatic way. Nowadays, a lot of information of any domain, which can be used as the source for the target domain module, can be easily found in different formats. The work here presented describes a domain independent method based on Natural Language Processing techniques and heuristic reasoning to acquire the domain module from documents and their indexes.

Using CM-ED for the generation of graphical exercises based on concept maps

Mikel Larrañaga; Urko Rueda; Jon A. Elorriaga; Ana Arruarte

CM-ED is a concept map editor developed with the aim of being useful in different contexts and uses of the educational agenda. This paper describes the use of CM-ED to create graphical exercises based on Concept Maps. CM-ED integrated in an intelligent tutoring system authoring tool will allow teachers to include this new set of exercises in the new tutor. In this way, the more complete the set of exercises, the greater the potential of the tutor.

A template-based concept mapping tool for computer-aided learning

Ana Arruarte; Jon A. Elorriaga; Urko Rueda

In this paper, the authors study the use of concept maps as support resources useful for different tasks in the computer-aided learning area. These applications include an auxiliary cognitive tool for the student, the design of new knowledge presentation and evaluation activities as well as the gathering of the domain knowledge. In addition, a generic concept mapping tool designed for these aims is presented.

This paper presents a study carried out at the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU with the aim of evaluating the CM-ED (concept map editor) with social education students. Concept mapping is a widely accepted technique that promotes meaningful learning. Graphically representing concepts of the learning domain and relationships between them helps students integrate new knowledge into their current cognitive structure. Due to the flexibility of computer-aided drawing graphs, several concept mapping tools have been developed and their use has been studied over the last few years. CM-ED is a multilingual and multimedia software program designed for drawing concept maps. Until recently, CM-ED had been mainly used and evaluated in computer science university degree. This paper represents a qualitative step in the evaluation of CM-ED: from technical students to students of more theoretical fields. The main characteristics of the CM-ED editor and the carried out study are presented in this paper.

A multilingual concept mapping tool for a diverse world

Mikel Larrañaga; Urko Rueda; Jon A. Elorriaga; Ana Arruarte

Todays world culture wealth is based on the diversity of language and cultures that are an inherent part of the identity of its countries and regions. Education has a preeminent responsibility to preserve worlds cultural heritage. Computer-based learning tools among other issues must also take into account the variety of languages. Some issues about the localisation of the CM-ED Concept Map EDitor are presented. First, some aspects related to software localisation are introduced. Then, the main characteristics of CM-ED are briefly described. Finally, the two levels in which localisation techniques have been applied over CM-ED are showed. CM-ED is localisable not only at user interface level but also regarding the final concept maps it generates.

Organizing the learning resources related to the subject Introduction to Artificial Intelligence through Concept Maps

Ana Arruarte; Urko Rueda; Jon A. Elorriaga

Concept Mapping is a technique that allows information visualization. A Concept Map is a graphical way of representing and organizing knowledge. It is comprised of nodes and links, arranged in some spatial distribution to reflect the domain information. Nodes represent concepts, and links represent the relationship between concepts; both concepts and links are labeled and may be categorized. Inside the educational area concept maps can be used for supporting learning, for assessing learning, and also for organizing and presenting information. Introduction to artificial intelligence is a compulsory subject studied at the first term of the Computer Science degree in the University of the Basque Country. In this work a study carried out by 6 voluntary students with the aim of organizing all the learning resources (theoretical contents, laboratories, exercises,...) related to that subject by means of a concept map is presented. CM-ED is the Concept Map EDitor used to fulfill this objective. Representing the variety of learning resources related to the subject in a visual format makes it easier their organization and their later visualization and searching.

Towards Collaborative Domain Module Authoring

Mikel Larrañaga; Ianire Niebla; Urko Rueda; Ana Arruarte; Jon A. Elorriaga

Technology supported learning systems have proved to be useful in many learning situations. However, the development of such systems is still a hard task. Ontologies and learning object technologies, as they improve the knowledge reuse, can lighten the content authoring process. This paper presents Elkar-DOM, a collaborative domain module authoring tool. The main goal of Elkar-DOM is to enhance the cooperation of human instructors and instructional designers in the domain module definition.

TOKA: a computer assisted assessment tool integrated in a real use context

Mikel Kerejeta; Mikel Larrañaga; Urko Rueda; Ana Arruarte; Jon A. Elorriaga

Throughout this paper TOKA, a Web-based computer assisted assessment system is described. TOKA is valid for generating and automatically evaluating multilingual test exercises. It has been designed with the aim of providing teachers and students with an automatic assessment tool. A case study of how TOKA has been used for continuous assessment in a computer security course at the University of the Basque Country is also included.

Validating DynMap as a Mechanism to Visualize the Student’s Evolution Through the Learning Process

Urko Rueda; Mikel Larrañaga; Jon A. Elorriaga; Ana Arruarte

This paper describes a study conducted with the aim of validating DynMap, a system based on Concept Maps, as a mechanism to visualize the evolution of the students through the learning process of a particular subject. DynMap has been developed with the aim of providing the educational community with a tool that facilitates the inspection of the student data. It offers the user a graphical representation of the student model and enables learners and teachers to understand the model better.
