This letter is devoted to fabrication and tests of an optical fiber with a phosphate glass core in a silica cladding. The fiber preform was made by melting Yb, Er co-doped phosphate laser glass in a high-purity silica tube. 1.54 μm laser action was demonstrated under 1.06 μm pumping into the Yb absorption band.

Experimental and theoretical comparison of supercontinuum generation for femtosecond and nanosecond pulses with similar peak power level in the same nonlinear media was provided. In the case of femtosecond pumping, we observed a number of peaks and in the case of nanosecond pulses, we observed a continuous spectrum.

S A Filatova; V A Kamynin; V. B. Tsvetkov; Oleg I. Medvedkov; A.S. Kurkov

We demonstrate the efficient amplification of small signals in a spectral range of 2020–2120 nm by an all-fiber Ho-doped amplifier pumped at 1125 nm. A maximum gain of 35.8 dB was achieved at a wavelength of 2050 nm. A gain greater than 30 dB was obtained over the whole range.

We report a passively mode-locked, all-fibre holmium laser based on nonlinear polarisation rotation. As a pump source use is made of an ytterbium-doped fibre laser. The pulse repetition rate of the holmium laser is , and the pulse duration does not exceed at wavelengths of 2065 and . The average laser output power reaches .

S A Filatova; V A Kamynin; I V Zhluktova; A. I. Trikshev; V. B. Tsvetkov

We report an all-fiber mode-lock holmium-doped ring laser passively mode-locked by nonlinear polarization rotation without dispersion compensation. The laser produced picosecond pulses at 2.057 ?m. The average output power was 4.5 mW.

V A Kamynin; S A Filatova; I.V. Zhluktova; V. B. Tsvetkov

We have demonstrated the amplification of the small signals in a spectral range of 2-2.15 um by all-fiber Ho-doped amplifier pumped at 1125 nm. Maximum gain more than 35 dB was achieved.

All-fiber Ho-doped laser tunable from 2.1 to 2.045 μm

S. O. Antipov; V A Kamynin; Sergey I. Kablukov; K. S. Raspopin; A.S. Kurkov

To the best of our knowledge we have demonstrated the first all-silicon glass mid-infrared continuous wave holmium doped fiber laser tunable over 55 nm range. Alteration of an output wavelength was achieved by implementation of tunable Fiber Bragg Grating closing the input of laser cavity. As an output reflector a cleaved fiber end was used with a refractive index of ~4%. The maximum output power of 3.4 W was achieved at 2.1 μm in continuous wave in comparison with previously obtained 2 W [1].

The goal of the present work is to develop a composite Yb-Er doped optical fiber that combines the advantages of both phosphate and silica glasses. In the lasing experiment the output fiber of 4W at 1064 nm laser was spliced with high-reflective fiber Bragg grating having resonance wavelength 1535 nm with core diameter corresponding to the Yb-Er fiber. The grating was then spliced with Yb-Er fiber having the length of 0.9 m. The Yb-Er laser resonator was formed by the Bragg grating and cleaved fiber end. Maximum output power of 130 mW and the slope efficiency 4% were obtained. Relatively small efficiency value in the first experiment can be explained by high splice connection losses. Thus an optical fiber with Yb-Er co-doped phosphate glass core in a silica cladding was fabricated. 1.54 μm laser action in it was demonstrated under core pumping into Yb absorption band.

Mid-IR supercontinuum generation in thulium-doped fiber amplifier

V A Kamynin; Ya E Sadovnikova; A.S. Kurkov; V. B. Tsvetkov

At present long wavelength limit for supercontinuum generation in the silica based fibers was shown [1, 2]. Also one of the interesting problems is to obtain the high spectral power density. One of the ways to get it is using optical fiber amplifiers as a media for supercontinuum generation. Yb-doped fiber amplifier was used for supercontinuum generation [3], but longest wavelength generation was above 2 um. To enhance supercontinuum spectrum in the range over 2 um one should use fibers doped by thulium or holmium as gain media [4, 5].
