ALEGRA is an arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (multiphysics) computer code developed at Sandia National Laboratories since 1990. The code contains a variety of physics options including magnetics, radiation, and multimaterial flow. The code has been developed for nearly two decades, but recent work has dramatically improved the code’s accuracy and robustness. These improvements include techniques applied to the basic Lagrangian differencing, artificial viscosity and the remap step of the method including an important improvement in the basic conservation of energy in the scheme. We will discuss the various algorithmic improvements and their impact on the results for important applications. Included in these applications are magnetic implosions, ceramic fracture modeling, and electromagnetic launch.

Flame capturing with an advection–reaction–diffusion model

Natalia Vladimirova; V. Gregory Weirs; Lenya Ryzhik

We conduct several verification tests of the advection–reaction–diffusion flame-capturing model, developed by Khokhlov in 1995 for subsonic nuclear burning fronts in supernova simulations. We find that energy conservation is satisfied, but there is systematic error in the computed flame speed due to thermal expansion, which was neglected in the original model. We decouple the model from the full system, determine the necessary corrections for thermal expansion, and then demonstrate that these corrections produce the correct flame speed. The flame-capturing model is an alternative to other popular interface tracking techniques, and might be useful for applications beyond astrophysics.

Enhanced Verification Test Suite for Physics Simulation Codes

James R. Kamm; Jerry S. Brock; Scott T. Brandon; David L. Cotrell; Patrick Knupp; William J. Rider; Timothy Guy Trucano; V. Gregory Weirs

This document discusses problems with which to augment, in quantity and in quality, the existing tri-laboratory suite of verification problems used by Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), and Sandia National Laboratories (SNL). The purpose of verification analysis is demonstrate whether the numerical results of the discretization algorithms in physics and engineering simulation codes provide correct solutions of the corresponding continuum equations.

Post-processing V&V level II ASC milestone (2360) results.

Elmer Chavez; David B. Karelitz; Thomas A. Brunner; Timothy Guy Trucano; Kenneth Moreland; V. Gregory Weirs; Timothy M. Shead

The 9/30/2007 ASC Level 2 Post-Processing V&V Milestone (Milestone 2360) contains functionality required by the user community for certain verification and validation tasks. These capabilities include loading of edge and face data on an Exodus mesh, run-time computation of an exact solution to a verification problem, delivery of results data from the server to the client, computation of an integral-based error metric, simultaneous loading of simulation and test data, and comparison of that data using visual and quantitative methods. The capabilities were tested extensively by performing a typical ALEGRA HEDP verification task. In addition, a number of stretch criteria were met including completion of a verification task on a 13 million element mesh.
