Abstract The tensor analyzing power A yy in inclusive breakup of 9 GeV/c deuterons on carbon has been measured at the detected proton angle of 85 mr. The analyzing power remains positive at the highest measured momentum of the proton in definite contradiction with the predictions of the existing models. The vector analyzing power A y has been obtained simultaneously with A yy .

New accurate data on the neutron-proton spin-dependent total cross section difference ΔσL(np) at the neutron beam kinetic energies 1.4, 1.7, 1.9 and 2.0 GeV are presented. A number of physical and methodical results on investigation of an elasticnp→pn charge exchange process over a few GeV region are also presented. Measurements were carried out at the Synchrophasotron and Nuclotron of the Veksler and Baldin Laboratory of High Energies of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research.

The results of measurements and the handling procedure of data on the tensor polarization of the deuteron beam arising as the beam passes through matter obtained at the Nuclotron during the June 2008 run using an extracted unpolarized 5 GeV/c deuteron beam are described. The effect observed is compared with calculations made in the framework of the Glauber multiple-scattering theory.

The tensor polarization of the deuteron beam arising as deuterons pass through a carbon target was measured. The experiment was performed with an extracted unpolarized 5-GeV/c deuteron beam of the Nuclotron. The effect observed is compared with the calculations made using the Glauber multiple scattering theory.

The angular dependence of the tensor Ayy and vector Ay analyzing powers in the inelastic scattering of deuterons with a momentum of 9.0 GeV/c on hydrogen and carbon have been measured. The range of measurements corresponds to the baryonic resonance excitation with masses 2.2--2.6 GeV/c^2. The Ayy data being in good agreement with the previous results demonstrate an approximate

The range of measurements corresponds to the baryonic resonance excitation with masses of ∼2.2–2.6 GeV/c2. The Ayy data, being in good agreement with the previous results, demonstrate an approximate t scaling up to −1.5 (GeV/c)2. The large values of Ay show a significant role of the spin-dependent part of the elementary amplitude of the NN → NN* reaction. Data on the tensor and vector analyzing powers (Ayy and Ay, respectively) in the fragmentation of a 9-GeV/c deuteron on hydrogen and carbon nuclei at high proton transverse momenta are presented. These data are compared with the results of relevant calculations performed within light-front dynamics by using various deuteron wave functions. The best description of the data is attained with the relativistic deuteron wave function derived within field-theory light-front dynamics.

Preliminary data on the tensor analyzing power A yy in breakup of 9 GeV/c deuterons on hydrogen and carbon nuclei at secondary proton transverse momenta up to ~ 900 MeV/c are presented. The results suggest that a deuteron structure function at short distances can depend on more than one independent variable unlike an ordinary wave function.

The experiment on the investigation of the A(d, p)X reaction at the extracted deuteron beam created at the Serpukhov U-70 accelerator is proposed. Precise measurements of the momentum spectra of protons emitted in the (d, p) reaction at an initial deuteron momenta of 20–40 GeV/c can give unique information on the deuteron short-range structure. A manifestation of contribution of nonnucleonic degrees of freedom in the deuteron is entirely possible over this energy range.
