PARTICLES AND FIELDS: Annual Meeting | 1983

We emphasize the general ideas behind grand unification with special attention on the violation of well‐known low energy conservation laws such as baryon and lepton number. We discuss the relevance of the grand unification ideas to astrophysics and some of the theoretical problems in model building, and the salient features of a few generic models. We conclude the review with some general remarks.

Abstract In a recent paper, Slansky et al. have suggested that SU(3) C may be broken to SO(3) × Z 3 in order to explain the possible existence of fractionally charged states. We point out that there are low mass monopoles associated with such a symmetry breakdown and discuss their properties. Such states may be observable at LEP if not at PETRA energies.
