Voice Assisted Embedded Navigation System for the Visually Impaired

V. Ramya; Laxmi Raja; B Palaniappan

For visually impaired people, a cane is a close companion helping them to detect and avoid obstacles while walking. But while walking in a new or changed environment, it is hard for them to guess where they are. Also it will be a problem when they lose memory of locations and places. The standard method for taking notes by visually impaired is to emboss Braille dots on a paper, which can be read by feeling the dots by fingers [16]. It is difficult to imprint, copy, transfer or edit these writings. With the advancement in modern day electronic sensors, touch sensing and microcontroller technology, the proposed system aids the visually impaired in navigation via audible messages and haptic feedback, helping them localize where they are and to improve their mobility. This system supports the visually impaired to enter notes and control device operation via touch keypad. The device also provides user information in audio format, including navigation direction, ambient light and temperature condition. The aim of this project is to help visually impaired to improve their communication and provides independency during walking in even unknown areas.

Embedded System for Automatic Irrigation of Cardamom Field using Xbee-PRO Technology

V. Ramya; B. Palaniappan; Boby George

This project proposed an embedded system for automatic mist irrigation for cardamom field, which has a wireless sensor network for real time infield sensing and control of an irrigation system. This wireless system supports the cardamom field which has both plain and slope areas. Too much watering causes diseases to cardamom. This system provides uniform and required level of water for both plain and slope areas and therefore it avoids the water overflow at the slope areas which saves the plant and also water. This system has software for real-time in-field sensing and control of an irrigation system. Field conditions were site-specifically monitored by in-field sensor stations distributed across the field and then wirelessly transmitted to a base station. This irrigation system updates solenoid valves for specified location of mist emitters automatically according to the set point of temperature, humidity and soil moisture. This system also senses the water level of the tank and whenever the water level is too low then the system immediately provides a visual and sound alarm and then it automatically switches ON the motor. When the water level reaches 90% of the tank then the motor is switched OFF through the remote system. Communication signals from the sensor network and irrigation controller to the base station interfaced using XbeePRO communication and this technology is a low-cost, lowpower wireless sensor network. The modules operate within the 2.4 GHz frequency band and outdoor RF line-of-sight range up to 4000 ft. (1200 m) and RF Data Rate 250,000 bps.

Embedded system for Hazardous Gas detection and Alerting

V. Ramya

Safety plays a major role in today’s world and it is necessary that good safety systems are to be implemented in places of education and work. This work modifies the existing safety model installed in industries and this system also be used in homes and offices. The main objective of the work is designing microcontroller based toxic gas detecting and alerting system. The hazardous gases like LPG and propane were sensed and displayed each and every second in the LCD display. If these gases exceed the normal level then an alarm is generated immediately and also an alert message (SMS) is sent to the authorized person through the GSM. The advantage of this automated detection and alerting system over the manual method is that it offers quick response time and accurate detection of an emergency and in turn leading faster diffusion of the critical situation. Remote Patient Monitoring and Logging System using ZigBee

V. Ramya; R. Uma Maheswari; B. Palaniappan

Remote Patient Monitoring is an alternative to regular home check-ups of patients with special medical conditions, physically challenged and the elderly who are unable to regularly visit a healthcare facility. Remote Patient Monitoring system allows the patient to be monitored remotely from their home itself. The system described here allows data acquisition from the fixed sensors. It is cheaper to monitor the elderly and infirm about patient physical states to the remote system. The doctor can directly monitor the patients information. This paper also includes the web part; the patient’s database is monitored through embedded web server. The monitoring center receives the information from the patient and maintains the database, based on it the doctor can judge the patient status and then diagnose. The system uses the IEEE 802.15.4 standard and low cost Zig-Bee technology for wireless communication between the patient data acquisition system and the patient monitoring system and it supports the distance from 30m to 100m depends upon the power and output. Zig-Bee uses frequency bands of 2.4 GHz, and its transmission rate is 20 kbps to 250 kbps. The proposed system uses the high end processer ARM (Advanced RISC Machine).

Embedded Home Automation for Visually Impaired

V. Ramya; B. Palaniappan

This paper aims to develop an embedded system which is used to control the home appliances through voice and mobile for the visually impaired people and also for the physically challenged people. Though various techniques have been proposed and are available currently, most of them are not user friendly for the visually impaired people and thus a friendly system has been developed for them. As speech is the preferred mode of operation for these people, this project intends to make use of voice oriented command words for controlling purposes. Further the hand-held unit has a microphone to receive the voice input and is a wireless module which uses the Radio Frequency (RF) technology. This project uses the DTMF technique in the mobile device so as to avoid any scenario involving visual interaction for the benefit of the user. Also in this module there is a voice feedback as an acknowledgement both for the voice controlled automation and automation through mobile.

A Web based Observance and Alerting for Underground and Fish Pond Water Quality

V. Ramya; V.Balaji V.Balaji; T. Akilan

is one amongst the foremost necessary and basic natural resources. This approach of constant observance and alerting of underground and fish pond water shall promote the implementation of actions that will forestall human sickness caused thanks to consumption of poor quality of water and to develop health Fish Lake. This project proposes a sensing element primarily based pollution detection and alerting to the licensed agent via SMS and e-mail. The key parameters taken under consideration during this work are pH scale level, temperature, Dissolved Oxygen(DO) for fish lake water and therefore the water level, Total dissolved solids (TDS) were thought of for underground water. These parameters were detected by the corresponding sensors associated and are sent to the microcontroller unit wherever it is compared with the set point and invokes an alarm according it. The LCD display interfaces with the microcontroller unit to reveal this noninheritable parameter of water. Further, these parameters were sent to the base station through the wireless Zig-Bee communication module. Web site is maintained to store parameter of water and therefore the agent will read the water quality through web site (www.watermonitoringsystem.in). Once water parameter is not acceptable for drinking purpose then associate E-Mail and SMS alert is given to the user. KeywordsLCD, Microcontroller, Sensors, Zig-Bee technology

Designing an Embedded System for Autonomous Building Map Exploration Robot

V. Ramya; T. Akilan; N. Vignesh

n many fields, the use of autonomous robots can provide significant benefits. Robots can be used to reduce the risk involved with human physical intrusion, especially in hazardous environments. They can approach the locations of attention to report sensory data and to show more detailed views of a mistrustful area. Moreover they can perform long- time tedious tasks that require reliable execution, without lowering their level of efficiency (3). Robot navigation is defined as the combination of three basic activities such as, Map Building, Localization and Path planning. It is very important to have an accurate map and a reliable localization. All these information are sent to the display unit (Remote receiver) via RF module. The display unit is responsible for integrating all the sensory data collected by the robot and to provide the information as a map on the LCD display. Apart from viewing the map, the human operator could take important decisions about the path, with which the robot would take in special situations using the touch screen interface in the display unit. This type of robot would help civilians and military persons while dealing with dangerous situations like war and terrorist seeking operations. So this robot will help the first responders who could send this robot to quickly search the building structure and send back a map. This way they would have a much better sense of what to expect and they can work out a plan before entering into the building.
