Research has shown that successive ionic layer deposition (SILD) technology can be used for improvement operating characteristics of solid state conductometric gas sensors. This technology gives possibility to deposit nanolayers of noble metals such as Pd, Ag, SnO2-Au nanocomposites, and oxides of transition metals such as Cu, Fe, Mn, Co, which can play the role of catalytically active filters for ozone.

It is shown that successive ionic layer deposition (SILD) method can be used for a surface functionalizing of the SnO2 films and improving their gas sensing properties. It was found that gold clusters deposited on the SnO2 surface were active to both reducing and oxidizing gases. However, the most significant increase in the conductivity response was observed during detection of ozone. It was established that the effect of the SnO2 surface decoration by AuNPs on gas sensing characteristics depends on the number of deposition cycles, i.e. the size of gold clusters. Moreover, there is an optimal level of surface doping, and it corresponds to a very small degree of the surface coverage by gold. Models showing the promotional role of Au additives were then discussed, and the mechanism of sensitization in the SnO2:Au-based gas sensor are proposed.

New approach for the rational synthesis and surface functionalizing of SnO2 films aimed for gas sensors applications was discussed in this paper. It was shown that successive ionic layer deposition (SILD) technology due to its simplicity, low cost, and ability to control the deposition of nanolayers of various materials on rough surface can attract increased interest for those purposes.

Results related to synthesis, characterization and applications of Ag nanoclusters for Si porosification and SnO2-based gas sensors optimization are presented in given report. It is shown that concentration and size of the silver nanoparticles deposited on a surface of monocrystalline silicon can be controlled by SILD conditions.

The problems associated with the synthesis, characterization and application of -Au nanocomposites for the optimization of conductometric gas sensors have been discussed in this report. Nanocomposites have been synthesized on the surface of films using successive ionic layer deposition(SILD) method. It has been shown that the proposed approach to surface modification of metal oxide films is an excellent method for the optimization of the operating characteristics of -based gas sensors, being developed for the detection of reducing gases as well as ozone.
