Street lighting power quality

Radu-Dumitru Pentiuc; Valentin Vlad; Dorin-Dumitru Lucache; Sorin G. Pavel

This paper presents the general aspects of the theory of power quality analysis and the mathematical description of the main parameters which are listed in the paper. Since the proper functioning of electrical equipment depends on network voltage harmonics and current waveform, an investigation of urban street lighting in this regard is beneficial.

Enhancing the Flexibility of Manufacturing Systems Using the RFID Technology

Valentin Vlad; Adrian Graur; Cristina Elena Turcu; Cezar Popa

The introduction of RFID technology in the manufacturing environment provides the basis for implementing much more agile systems by providing continuous, real-time information relating to the movement of physical items. The components traceability, enabled by RFID technology, may be used to increase the degree of automation of the system calibration process at the shop floor level. An interesting aspect relating to the calibration process of a complex reconfigurable system is how to automatically determine the production facility’s positions and the optimum routes between them, especially when the system is consisting of a big number of production facilities, routes and switches. This paper proposes an RFID-based method to automatically determine the positions of the production facilities involved in the manufacturing process, placed along conveyor belts. The information acquired in the discovering process will allow the optimal leading of raw materials towards the production facilities to be processed.

Optimisation of operating mechanism and drive system for medium voltage circuit breakers

Cezar Popa; Radu Pentiuc; Valentin Vlad; Alexandru Miron

This paper identifies several directions to improve the performances of the operating mechanism for medium voltage circuit breakers in order to get variable moving characteristics of the moving contact adjusted to the value of the switching current. Different drive solutions currently used in the operation of vacuum circuit breakers and SF6 were analyzed comparatively, as well as the performances they have to meet depending on the application. The solution proposes the use of a system with a microprocessor able to independently control the operation of moving contacts by stepper motors and the acquisition of the circuit breaker functional parameters.

Concepts and models for design and simulation of distributed control systems for future power grid

Valentin Vlad; Cezar Popa; Adrian Graur; Radu Pentiuc

This paper presents our vision on developing a software tool for modeling and simulating the intelligent behavior of the future power grid. Modeling approaches based on function blocks and holonic concepts are proposed for the intelligent control entities, designed to interact with each other to optimize the operation of the grid in relation to the distribution of power, integration of equipment and failure recovery. IEC 61850 specifications are selected as reference model for communications.

Control architecture for power distribution systems based on IEC 61850, IEC 61499 and holonic concepts

Valentin Vlad; Cezar Popa; Radu Pentiuc; Corneliu Buzduga

This paper proposes a control architecture for future power distribution systems, which combines the specifications of the international standards IEC 61850 and IEC 61499 with concepts from the field of multi-agent systems. Models for substation automation systems are proposed, relying on IEC 61499 function blocks for the implementation of the control logic and on IEC 61850 abstract services for communication and information exchange between the intelligent electronic devices. For efficient structuring and distribution of control, holonic models were proposed and exemplified for power substations.
