Influence of humidity and temperature on the corrosion of reinforced concrete prisms

Reinforcement corrosion is one of the major durability problems that need to be solved in order to extend the service life of a structure. It is influenced, on one hand, by the concrete itself, sound or polluted (chlorinated or carbonated), and on the other hand, by the environmental conditions (controlled or outdoor). To explore the influence of temperature and humidity, electrochemical characterisations (potential, linear polarisation resistance and corrosion rate) were carried out on reinforced concrete prisms. A database of more than 3000 values has been delivered. The results enabled us to deduce that both parameters have influences on each other. Moreover, considering the four concretes, the corrosion order obtained in controlled conditions may be different from the one obtained in outdoor conditions.

Modelling the effects of steel corrosion in concrete, induced by carbon dioxide penetration

Alain Millard; Valérie L’Hostis

The aim of this article is to present the modelling approach developed in order to predict the effects of corrosion of the reinforcements induced by carbon dioxide penetration. The final objective of the project is to propose a phenomenological and coupled model taking into account all the processes involved in the degradation of reinforced concrete. In this context, the CORDOBA model considers the coupling between different processes involved in the cracking induced corrosion phenomenon. More precisely, hydric behaviour of concrete is coupled with oxygen transport and corrosion reaction, as well as with mechanical damage of concrete. The effect of a pre-existing crack on the development of corrosion is also analysed.

Characterization of Steel/Concrete Interface for a Long-Term Corroded Beam Stored in Chloride Environment

Rui Jin Zhang; Hui Lin Yang; Valérie L’Hostis; Arnaud Castel; Raoul François

This paper deals with the steel/concrete interface of a corroded beam B2CL1 after a 23 years exposure in chloride environment. XRD, SEM and Raman techniques were performed to investigate the chemical compositions and the spatial distribution of corrosion products. The experimental results illustrate that the corrosion product layer is a multi-layer constituted as marbling structure. It is composed of a mix of iron oxides and iron oxi-hydroxides. Iron species were found in the vicinity of concrete mainly in cracks, as it was already observed in the literature.
