This article presents comparative results about the ways Brazilian working-class and middle-class youth interpret class messages in telenovelas. This work thus explores class differences in light of the current context of Brazilian peripheral modernization and argues for the continuing centrality of telenovelas in communicating to cross-class audiences about modernity. It further develops a systematic methodology for reception studies to account for the complexity of everyday sociocultural interactions and how hegemony functions. The conclusion suggests preferred and negotiated readings of poverty may be associated with telenovela viewing, which, in turn, promotes faith in personal merit and obscures Brazilian inequalities.

Abstract The text problematizes different dimensions of the ‘new middle class’, especially approaches of the media discourse which depart from associations to class fractions of different economic capital. From a bibliographic research of the themes that theoretically articulate the topic, it thinks the ‘new middle class’ as a relational notion considering its reflections in the actual life of the whole of so-ciety. It is discussed how it reflects on the ways in which the experience provided by the increase in consumption power amongst these subjects is represented in the media , referring to new experiences that allow them to perceive themselves and their social position, contributing to the conformation of their class identity and of their relation to other groups. Finally, based on theoretical work of Ray-mond Williams, the text approaches the “new middle class” as a cultural formation in its pre-emer-gent state, a social experience in progress , whose outcomes are not completely classifiable.

In this paper, we reflect on how the soap opera audience, family and social class constitute the female identity of young working class women. The sample, which is configured as audience ethnography, was composed of 12 young people between the ages of 16 and 24 living on the outskirts of Santa Maria-RS. The results indicate that the economic deprivation interferes in the experiences and ways of being a woman, by teenage pregnancy, by work, by dropping out of school or on television as the primary form of recreation. The soap opera is also essential, because if, on the one hand, (re) produces a traditional female model - in which motherhood and marriage are female priorities - the other, gives evidences of gender equality representations, which they don’t experience in their daily lives.
