INTRODUCTION: The visible exhaustion of the traditional teaching model for physiotherapy, along with a new professional profile and a change in the approach to the health-illness process (which has come to include functionality), has stimulated the need for new pedagogical projects for teaching physiotherapy. This should include a perspective of social and economic transformation of the regional population (in this case, the administrative region of Ceilândia, in the Federal District, Brasilia, Brazil). OBJECTIVE: To present a pedagogical project for the undergraduate course in physiotherapy stressing education focused on human functionality in scenarios of professional practice,e proposed by the Brazilian public healthcare system. METHODS: The curriculum is being constructed in an innovating perspective with proposals regarding the general realm (lifestyle centers, biological systems, physiotherapy skills and scenarios of physiotherapy practices), specific realm (health maintenance, health-illness process, healthcare, human functionality, process of permanent education) and complementary realm (research and extension activities). RESULTS: The pedagogical project proposal was carried out in such a way as to complement the expected general and specific goals as well as professional and social profiles. The indissociability of teaching-research-extension presumes a reference in the professor-student relationship for the comprehension of research and extension activities as fundamental elements of the teaching-learning process linked to experience in the actual context, thereby concretizing the relationship between theory and practice, focusing on the public healthcare system. CONCLUSION: The diversification of practices in the context of the public healthcare system includes a perspective of social and economic transformation in the population within the social and political scenario of the Federal District. In this context, priority is given to the education/training of generalist, reflexive, critical physiotherapists, involved from the beginning with community service on different levels of healthcare, addressing aspects of human functionality in accordance with the needs of the Brazilian public healthcare system.

This study aimed to assess the electromyographic feasibility of different hip muscles on transfemoral unilateral lower limb amputees to a possible control of artificial limbs. The volunteers were split into two groups: eight males, physically active amputees and a control group composed of eight males, healthy, non–amputees individuals. The hip muscles were assessed in accordance to the general consensus by SENIAM project, and some adaptations were made in the amputees when the anatomical references were absents, such as the knee articulation. Thus, agonists and antagonists skeleton muscles were evaluated during the isometric contraction of hips movements of extension and flexion, which were controlled by an isokinect chair. The median frequency (Fmed) values did not represent significant differences and the RMS is the best muscle activity of amputees.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate factors associated with falls in community-dwelling older adults diagnosed with cataracts. An analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted with a sample of community-dwelling older adults residing in the Federal District of Brazil. Interviews and assessment tools were administered, such as the Timed Up and Go test, Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB), Biodex Balance System, Katz Index, Lawton Scale, Minnesota Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire and Mini Mental State Examination. Statistical analysis involved binary logistic regression. One hundred forty-two older adults (85 with cataracts) participated in the study (mean age: 69.39 ± 5.67 years). Falls were associated with the female sex (OR: 4.45) and sub-maximum score on the SPPB (OR: 3.53) among patients with cataracts, whereas multimorbidity (OR: 5.10) was the risk factor risk for older adults without cataracts. The data suggest different risk factors for falls among older adults diagnosed with cataracts.

Introduction: Transfemoral amputation leads to a series of functional changes in the body biomechanics that can interfere with the daily life of the amputee, generating patterns of posture and gait to compensate for the loss of the limb. Objective: This study aims to evaluate and compare the muscular responses of the hip during isometric contractions in transfemoral amputees, using an isokinetic dynamometer. Method: The study included four volunteers, two amputees and two non-amputees. Evaluation was performed using an isokinetic dynamometer in isometric angles of 30 and 60 degrees of 10 seconds duration. Each series was made of six repetitions, composed by three pushups and three extensions with a 20 seconds interval between each sequence. Results: The amputated limb showed a lower peak torque compared to the non-amputee, both in flexion and in extension of the hip at 30 and 60 degrees. Conclusion: Due to amputation, individuals have less hip muscle strength, which may impair daily activities such as walking, sitting and standing, climbing and descending stairs.
