An evaluation of a free volume representation for viscoelastic properties

Abstract Creep data for two different polyethylenes which were not amenable to master curve formation have been adjusted using a simple free volume model to produce master curves characterizing creep at the limit of zero stress. The validity of these master curves has been checked against results from relaxation tests which are available for the same two materials.

A study of flaw identification in adhesive bonds using a technique of impact modification

A small load transducer has been used to obtain force histories arising from the impact of steel spheres with flawed, laminated plates. The modification of the force-time record in the presence of the flaw is used for the detection of these force histories. Tests are reported for both bonded aluminum and glass-epoxy composite plates.

Furthermore, the measurement of err(X) and e~r by the simplified optical method is as easy as the ordinary two-dimensional photoelastic method, and more expedient than the layer-removal method which is essentially a destructive method. Therefore, we are confident that the simplified optical method in which the proposed fundamental equations are used is very effective for the experimental evaluation of residual stress and residual strain by rapid cooling in thermosetting resin strips.
