Small Medium Enterprises: On Utilizing Business-to-Business e-Commerce to Go Global

Veronica S. Moertini

Abstract In line with the growth of the Internet, the Business-to-Business (B2B) e-commerce has also been growing rapidly. Enterprises all over the world have been going global by taking the advantages B2B e-commerce, which can be materialized by joining global B2B marketplace websites. Thousands of Indonesian SMEs have joined these marketplace websites. However, based on analyzing the survey results, it is doubtful that the SMEs have been successful in marketing products via these marketplace websites despite the potential advantages of the websites. This paper presents the survey results, problems identified and recommendations for Indonesian SMEs, the government and organizations aiming to develop Indonesian SMEs to go global. The recommendations include how to develop company websites properly, how to join B2B e-commerce marketplace websites and how to communicate effectively in dealing with potential international buyers.

MANAGING RISKS AT THE PROJECT INITIATION STAGE OF LARGE IS DEVELOPMENT FOR HEI: A CASE STUDY IN INDONESIA

Veronica S. Moertini

Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Indonesia feel the pressure to provide up to date IT facilities for students, who have been using IT devices and the Internet as part of their life style. One of the facilities needed most is an Academic Information System (AIS) that provides 24/7 access to up to date information and academic transactions. Under the circumstances in 2007, at the HEI of the case study, the AIS must be built in‐house regardless of the HEIs being unprepared to develop large scale information systems (IS). IS project development is known to have high risks, even in developed countries. This makes it even riskier in Indonesia, where organizations are less established than in developed countries. This paper presents the risks faced at the project initiation stage of AIS development project and the methods of managing these risks. The methods proposed have been implemented successfully in the HEI of the case study.

The Academic MIS Model Used in Higher Education to Resolve Typical Problems in Indonesia: A Case Study

Veronica S. Moertini; Tety Yuliaty; Wisnu Rumono; Buddy S. Tjhia

In response to education regulations for quality assurance (QA), universities in Indonesia strongly require an integrated management information system (MIS), such as Academic MIS (AMIS). In developing AMIS, the main issues that must be addressed are the urgent need for implementing university QA standards (even though departments have already implemented their best practices for years and show reluctance to change), changing requirements, and the need for a quick delivery system despite the fact that AMIS is very large in scope. This paper contributes to modeling AMIS, which is suitable for universities in Indonesia. This research has been conducted at one of the best private universities, Parahyangan Catholic University. Having measured the quality of AMIS using several key business measures, results indicated that the proposed model successfully resolved the issues at stake.

Enhancing parallel k-means using map reduce for discovering knowledge from big data

Veronica S. Moertini; Liptia Venica

Knowledge discovery from data using clustering algorithm include stages of data preprocessing, clustering the preprocessed dataset and evaluating patterns for obtaining knowledge. Along with the popularity of Hadoop, k-Means algorithm has been enhanced based on MapReduce for clustering big dataset. We enhance this existing algorithm such that it includes the capabilities for performing data preprocessing, generating patterns and measures such that these can be used for evaluating the quality of clusters. Our preliminary experiment results in small Hadoop cluster indicate that our proposed technique performs well for clustering a case study big dataset.

E-CRM development method for e-commerce system owned by small medium enterprises

Veronica S. Moertini; Niko Ibrahim; Verliyantina

While it is known that to promote business success, e-commerce systems must be supported by effective e-CRM (Electronic Customer Relationship Management), our survey results indicate that Indonesian e-commerce systems owned by SMEs have not provided effective-intelligent e-CRM services. In this paper, we propose an evolutionary e-CRM development method suitable for SMEs that include activities of enhancing the existing e-commerce systems to capture more needed data, data ware house development and e-CRM application development. The method has been being implemented in a case study firm and we find that it is applicable.

Academic IS for higher education institutions: the design of speedy courses registration transaction function

Veronica S. Moertini; Tety Yuliaty; Wisnu Rumono

Developing Academic IS (AIS) for HEIs is a highly complex task as many issues need to be resolved, such as how to provide course registration transaction function that provide speedy access for thousands of students. This paper discusses the function design to resolve the issue, which involves database physical, algorithm of data pre-processing for course eligibility computation and personalized user interface design. The design has been implemented in the AIS and used in Parahyangan Catholic University Indonesia successfully.

An implementation of graph mining to find the group evolution in communication data record

Imelda Atastina; Benhard Sitohang; G. A. Putri Saptawati; Veronica S. Moertini

In this paper, we show how to utilize communication transaction data to generate useful knowledge using graph mining. Knowledge in question is a model that can be used to know the group contained in an organization and the evolution of the group from time to time. We also show how to choose appropriate algorithms to deal with problems related to data conditions, how to analyze data, how to perform suitable preprocessing, graphs modeling that represents issues and some adaptations to produce the best models. The results of the implementation using the Facetnet algorithm, show that graph mining algorithm can be used to process communication data and build a meaningful group evolution model.

Guiding Genetic Algorithm via Viral Trait Spreading for Solving Sudoku Puzzle

Nico Saputro; Veronica S. Moertini

Genetic Algorithms work iteratively from generation to generation to find the optimal solution of optimization problems. However, due to the probabilistic operations of Genetic Algorithms (GAs), the performance of GAs search is unpredictable. Even worst, GAs may not be able to find the optimal solution after very long iteration. We propose a solution that incorporates a human intervention to guide GA achieving a better performance. We adopt the Viral Trait Spreading Framework for human intervention in the GA operations. Firstly, we classify GAs operation and then put each group of operation in the Framework. Most of all genetic algorithm operations fall into the Trait Adoption component. We optimized the design of genetic representation and genetic operators to tackle the fixed element constraint and row permutation constraint of Sudoku puzzle. Then, we implemented our approach in net logo, a multiagent programmable modeling environment. Experiment results showed that GA is capable of finding the optimal solution and the human intervention through Viral Trait Spreading Framework guides the GA in searching processes in the narrower search space.
