Medical education, training and preoperative diagnostics can be drastically improved with advanced technologies, such as virtual reality. The method proposed in this paper enables medical doctors and students to visualize and manipulate three-dimensional models created from CT or MRI scans, and also to analyze the results of fluid flow simulations. Simulation of fluid flow using the finite element method is performed, in order to compute the shear stress on the artery walls. The simulation of motion through the artery is also enabled. The virtual reality system proposed here could shorten the length of training programs and make the education process more effective.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is comparison of experimental values of the drawing forces to numerical values in different contact conditions, taking into account the appearance of galling which occurs due to of difficult drawing process conditions. Design/methodology/approach The following two research approaches are used in this paper – the physical modeling, realized by the laboratory experiment, and the numerical simulation of the ironing drawing process. By analyzing the obtained results, the technique of physical modeling, with help of the laboratory equipment and numerical simulation by application of the finite element method, can be successfully used in studying the thin sheet ironing – strip drawing process. Findings It is significant to compare values of the deformation forces obtained by physical experiment to values obtained by the numerical simulation. In that way, it is possible to compare applied contact conditions (four lubricants in that case) and estimate matching of experimentally and numerically obtained results of the deformation forces. Presented results point out very good technological characteristics of ecologically friendly lubricant (single-bath) and grease based on MoS2. Significant decrease of the deformation force was achieved by its application, as well as maintaining of the lubricant’s layer during the forming process and almost complete elimination of galling on the contact. Practical implications Numerical analysis of stresses in the working piece wall, during the thin sheet strip drawing, requires precise values of the friction coefficient. It is an important indicator because one can define the contact conditions as the input data for the numerical simulation, based on its values for each type of lubricants and each value of the compressive lateral force. Originality/value The environmentally friendly lubricant tested exhibits a more favorable distribution of the drawing force during the process, mainly in experimental case. Grease based on MoS2 has good lubricating properties but that lubricant is conventional and environmentally unacceptable. Ecologically friendly lubricant can be successfully used in real ironing strip drawing process especially for high values of holding force achieving an increased tool life.

Purpose – This paper aims to present combination of poly-jet technology and ink-jet technology in a multidisciplinary way in order to exploit advantages of these rapid prototyping techniques in manufacturing a demonstrator device – a variable interdigital capacitor. Design/methodology/approach – The platform of 3D complex geometry, with optimized design and cavity under the capacitors fingers (plates), was fabricated using Alaris 3D printer, whereas silver conductive segments were fabricated using Dimatix ink-jet printer and thanks to the mechanical flexibility the platform has been covered using these segments. Findings – When one side of the capacitors structure changes angular position (in the range from 0 to 90°) with reference to the fixed part, the variation in total capacitance is obtained. The total capacitance decreases (in the range from 20.2 to 1.5 pF) with decrease in effective overlapping area for the variation of angular position from 0 to 90° The maximum measured tuning ratio for the prop...

The paper presents integrative model-based approach in application of virtual engineering technologies in rapid product and process design and manufacturing. This has resulted in integration of so called CA- technologies and Virtual Reality in product design and FE numerical simulations and optimization of production processes, as digital prototyping of product and processes, from one side, and rapid prototyping techniques as physical prototyping, on the other side. Reverse engineering and coordinate metrology have been also applied in re-engineering of sheet metal forming process of existing product, with aim at generation of initial digital information about product and final quality control on multi-sensor coordinate measurement machine.

Abstract Embedded systems and industrial informatics represent two areas with significant research results of quite high added value. Transformation of such results into innovative products and services increases competitiveness and represents, through the enhancement of the citizens’ quality of life, a pay back to the society of research funds. This transformation has not been always straightforward. Learning from successful experiences is important. The present work elaborates a methodology for the selection, assessment and analysis of successful experiences related to this transformation of research to innovation.
