Optimal admission control in cognitive radio networks

Diego Pacheco-Paramo; Vicent Pla; Jorge Martinez-Bauset

We study a cognitive radio system in which the spectrum handover technique is applied by secondary users when they have to vacate a channel due to a primary user arrival. In order to limit the forced termination probability of secondary users a fractional guard channel reservation scheme is applied to give priority to spectrum handovers over new arrivals. We show that, contrary to what has been suggested, the reservation parameter cannot be adequately adjusted as a result of maximizing the throughput of secondary users. Instead we propose and explore two alternative configuration methods. The proposed methods are based on optimization problems that target the existing trade-off between blocking new sessions of secondary users and dropping ongoing ones. Additionally in our numerical experiments we identify some interesting and counterintuitive phenomena.

Modeling and Performance Analysis of Channel Assembling in Multichannel Cognitive Radio Networks With Spectrum Adaptation

Lei Jiao; Frank Y. Li; Vicent Pla

To accommodate spectrum access in multichannel cognitive radio networks (CRNs), the channel-assembling technique, which combines several channels together as one channel, has been proposed in many medium access control (MAC) protocols. However, analytical models for CRNs enabled with this technique have not been thoroughly investigated. In this paper, two representative channel-assembling strategies that consider spectrum adaptation and heterogeneous traffic are proposed, and the performance of these strategies is evaluated based on the proposed continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) models. Moreover, approximations of these models in the quasistationary regime are analyzed, and closed-form capacity expressions are derived in different conditions. The performance of different strategies, including the strategy without assembling, is compared with one another based on the numerical results obtained from these models and validated by extensive simulations. Furthermore, simulation studies are also performed for other types of traffic distributions to evaluate the validity and the preciseness of the mathematical models. Through both analyses and simulations, we demonstrate that channel assembling represented by the investigated strategies can improve the system performance if a proper strategy is selected with appropriate system parameter configurations.

Channel Assembling with Priority-Based Queues in Cognitive Radio Networks: Strategies and Performance Evaluation

Indika A. M. Balapuwaduge; Lei Jiao; Vicent Pla; Frank Y. Li

With the implementation of channel assembling (CA) techniques, higher data rate can be achieved for secondary users in multi-channel cognitive radio networks. Recent studies which are based on loss systems show that maximal capacity can be achieved using dynamic CA strategies. However the channel allocation schemes suffer from high blocking and forced termination when primary users become active. In this paper, we propose to introduce queues for secondary users so that those flows that would otherwise be blocked or forcibly terminated could be buffered and possibly served later. More specifically, in a multi-channel network with heterogeneous traffic, two queues are separately allocated to real-time and elastic users and channel access opportunities are distributed between these two queues in a way that real-time services receive higher priority. Two queuing schemes are introduced based on the delay tolerance of interrupted elastic services. Furthermore, continuous time Markov chain models are developed to evaluate the performance of the proposed CA strategy with queues, and the correctness as well as the preciseness of the derived theoretical models are verified through extensive simulations. Numerical results demonstrate that the integration of queues can further increase the capacity of the secondary network and spectrum utilization while decreasing blocking probability and forced termination probability.

Modeling and comparison of candidate selection algorithms in opportunistic routing

Amir Darehshoorzadeh; Llorenç Cerdà-Alabern; Vicent Pla

Opportunistic Routing (OR) has been investigated in recent years as a way to increase the performance of multihop wireless networks by exploiting its broadcast nature. In contrast to traditional routing, where traffic is sent along pre-determined paths, in OR an ordered set of candidates is selected for each next-hop. Upon each transmission, the candidates coordinate such that the most priority one receiving the packet actually forwards it. Most of the research in OR has been addressed to investigate candidate selection algorithms. In this paper we propose a discrete time Markov chain to assess the improvement that may be achieved using opportunistic routing. We use our model to compare a selected group of candidate selection algorithms that have been proposed in the literature. Our main conclusion is that optimality is obtained at a high computational cost, with a performance gain very similar to that of much simpler but non-optimal algorithms. Therefore, we conclude that fast and simple OR candidate selection algorithms may be preferable in dynamic networks, where the candidates sets are likely to be updated frequently.

On the impact of customer balking, impatience and retrials in telecommunication systems

Jesus R. Artalejo; Vicent Pla

This paper deals with a Markovian multiserver model, where the simultaneous effect of customer balking, impatience and retrials is evaluated. The study of systems incorporating these features is motivated by the observation of real service systems where these queueing phenomena interact. Simple approximations based on truncation and generalized truncation are provided. These approximations are compared according to different criteria for several selected scenarios. Finally, our results are used to evaluate the optimal ratio between the number of available channels and the number of waiting positions in an application to call center management.

Aggregation and conformance in differentiated service networks: a case study

Roch Guérin; Vicent Pla

The Differentiated Service (Diff-Serv) architecture [1] advocates a model based on different “granularity” at network edges and within the network. In particular, core routers are only required to act on a few aggregates that are meant to offer a pre-defined set of service levels. The use of aggregation raises a number of questions for end-to-end services, in particular when crossing domain boundaries where policing actions may be applied. This paper focuses on the impact of such policing actions in the context of individual and the bulk services built on top of the Expedited Forwarding (EF) [7] per-hop-behavior (PHB). The findings of this investigation confirm and quantify the expected need for reshaping at network boundaries, and identify a number of somewhat unexpected behaviors. Recommendations are also made for when reshaping is not available.

Dynamic Channel Aggregation Strategies in Cognitive Radio Networks with Spectrum Adaptation

Lei Jiao; Frank Y. Li; Vicent Pla

In cognitive radio networks, channel aggregation techniques which combine several channels together as one channel have been proposed in many MAC protocols. In this paper, spectrum adaptation is proposed in channel aggregation and two strategies which dynamically adjust channel occupancy of ongoing traffic flows are further developed. The performance of these strategies is evaluated using continuous time Markov chain models. Moreover, models in the quasi-stationary regime are analyzed and the closed-form capacity expression is derived in this regime. Numerical results demonstrate that the capacity of the secondary network can be improved by using channel aggregation with spectrum adaptation.

Modeling and Characterization of Spectrum White Spaces for Underlay Cognitive Radio Networks

Vicent Pla; Jose-Ramon Vidal; Jorge Martinez-Bauset; Luis Guijarro

Cognitive Radio (CR) networks are envisaged as the key technology to realize dynamic spectrum access and solving the scarcity of radio spectrum. Having a temporal characterization of the spectrum white spaces in the primary network is a key element for studying and designing radio resource management mechanisms in CR networks. In that sense, most of the studies in the literature rely on an ON-OFF model with exponentially distributed on and off times. The usage of that model, however, is principally based on its analytical tractability. In this paper we propose a versatile Markovian model for the duration of the spectrum white spaces. Our model builds on a simple model of the channel holding time (CHT) in the primary network and then matrix-analytic techniques are applied to derive and analyze the duration of the white spaces. Despite its simplicity, the proposed approach is proven to be able to model very accurately scenarios where the CHT distribution is of a more complex type not amenable to mathematical analysis. Our numerical results show that the duration of the white spaces exhibits a low sensitivity to the distribution of the channel holding time beyond the mean.

Comments on "Call Blocking Probability and Bandwidth Utilization of OFDM Subcarrier Allocation in Next-generation Wireless Networks"

Vicent Pla; Jorge Martinez-Bauset; Vicente Casares-Giner

We claim that the Markovian model proposed by J.-C. Chen and W.-S.E. Chen (2006) is not suitable for the intended physical system. A more adequate model is proposed, which additionally offers important advantages that are discussed in this letter.
