Aristotle and the Problem of Intentionality

Aristotle not only formulates the problem of intentionality explicitly, he makes a solution to it a requirement for any adequate theory of mind. His own solution, however, is not to be found in his theory of sensation, as Brentano and others have thought. In fact, it is precisely because Aristotle regards this theory as inadequate that he goes on to argue for a distinct new ability he calls “phantasia.” The theory of content he develops on this basis (unlike Brentano’s) is profoundly naturalistic: it is a representational theory, formulated in terms of the causal powers and physical magnitudes of the body.

Wenn Aristoteles Veranderungsprozesse erklart, kommen ublicherweise Duplikate ins Spiel: Nicht nur ›zeugt ein Mensch einen Menschen‹, sondern warme Dinge bewirken, dass andere Dinge warm werden, kalte bewirken, dass andere kalt werden, und so weiter (GC I 7, 324a9–14)1. Das kann selbst dann der Fall sein, wenn lebendige Wesen durch wahrnehmbare Eigenschaften verandert werden, wie etwa wenn eine Pflanze erwarmt oder abgekuhlt wird (De an. II 12, 424a32— b1)2. Die Weise, in der die Pflanze die Warme annimmt, erlaubt es, sie im selben Sinn warm zu nennen wie die Sonne (wenn auch nicht im selben Grad).
