A rapid and sensitive HPLC-UV method for the determination of ciprofloxacin in human plasma is described. Protein precipitation with acetonitrile was used to separate the drug from plasma protein. An ACE(®) 5 C18 column (250 mm×4.6 mm, 5 μm) with an isocratic mobile phase consisting of phosphate buffer (pH 2.7) and acetonitrile (77:23, v/v) was used for separation. The UV detector was set at 277 nm. The method was validated in the linear range of 0.05-8 μg/ml with acceptable inter- and intra-assay precision, accuracy and stability. The method is simple and rapid and can be used to quantify this widely used antibiotic in the plasma of patients suffering from Peripheral Arterial Disease.

The structures of anhydrobonellin and bonellin, the physiologically active pigment from the marine echiuroid

Andrew Pelter; James A. Ballantine; P. Murray-Rust; Victor Ferrito; Alexander F. Psaila

The structure of anhydrobonellin (II) has been proposed by spectroscopic techniques and confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The relationship of (II) to bonellin is clear and thus the structure of bonellin is certain.

Bonellin, a most unusual chlorin

Andrew Pelter; James A. Ballantine; Victor Ferrito; Victor Jaccarini; Alexander F. Psaila; Patrick J. Schembri

The physiologically active pigment bonellin is shown to be a chlorin unrelated to chlorophyll and having many novel structural features.

The structures of amino-acid conjugates of bonellin derived from the marine echuroid bonellia viridis

Andrew Pelter; Anthony Abela-Medici; James A. Ballantine; Victor Ferrito; Stephen Ford; Victor Jaccarini; Alexander F. Psaila

Abstract A series of compounds in which amino-acids are conjugated to the C-17c carbonyl group of bonellin have been obtained from the body wall of Bonellia viridis .

1. The photodynamic activity of bonellin, an integumentary chlorin of Bonellia viridis, is investigated. 2. 10(-6) M bonellin solutions haemolyze erythrocytes only in the presence of light. Previous illumination (tungsten lamp 2000-4000 lux for 1 hr) of the bonellin solutions does not affect the results. Under lowered oxygen tensions the bioactivity is depressed. Benzoquinone and singlet oxygen quenchers delay the photodynamic effect. 3. Bonellin (2 x 10(-6) M) destroys echinoid gamete function, depresses oxygen uptake of spermatozoa, and arrests development of echinoid and Bonellia eggs. These effects are produced only in the presence of light. 4. Copper bonellin is not photodynamically active. The role of copper may be to protect against photosensitization.

The biosynthesis of phenols. Part XXIV. Arugosin C, a metabolite of a mutant strain of Aspergillus rugulosus

James A. Ballantine; Victor Ferrito; Cedric H. Hassall; Malcolm L. Jenkins

It has been established that arugosin C, C25H28O6, an optically active metabolite of A. rugulosus, has the dibenz-[b,e]oxepin structure (IV) and is, therefore, closely related to arugosin A. This structure was established by mass spectrometry and by a comparison of the 1H and 13C n.m.r. spectra with those of arugosin A.

Development and validation of RhMAT, as medication assessment tool specifically designed for rheumatoid arthritis management

Louise Grech; Victor Ferrito; Anthony Serracino Inglott; Lilian M. Azzopardi

The implementation of individualised pharmaceutical care plans based on the identification of pharmaceutical care issues for rheumatoid arthritis patients presenting at outpatient clinic service has been proven to be effective in improving the quality of life of these patients. However, the identification and classification of pharmaceutical care issues into drug therapy problems does not give room to assessment of prescribing trends and adherence to international guidelines. The novel concept of medication assessment tools, is a concept which integrates pharmaceutical care issues within a larger context, that of evaluating the prescribing trends. The objective of this research was to design, and validate medication assessment tools specifically for rheumatoid arthritis patients.

The structure of bonellin and its derivatives. Unique physiologically active chlorins from the marine echurian Bonellia viridis

The structure of bonellin, the physiologically active pigment of the marine echurian worm Bonellia viridis, has been established as (10a), a unique type of alkylated chlorin, by a combination of physical methods. The structure was confirmed by an X-ray crystallographic study on anhydrobonellin methyl ester (12b).Bonellin is accompanied in the organism by a series of mono-amino-acid conjugate derivatives of general structure (14a) in which valine, leucine, isoleucine, and alloisoleucine are the major amino-acid constituents.
