The benefits of Geo-Tagging and microblogging in m-Learning: a use case

Christian Safran; Victor Manuel Garcia-Barrios; Martin Ebner

The recent years have shown the remarkable potential use of Web 2.0 technologies in education, especially in the context of informal learning. The application of Wikis for collaborative work is one example for this theory applied. The support of learning in those fields of education, which are strongly based on visual location-based information, could also benefit from Geo-Tagging, a technique that has become popular lately, and m-Learning, which allows learning in-the-field. This paper presents first developments on the combination of these three concepts into a geospatial Wiki for higher education, TUGeoWiki. Our solution proposal supports mobile scenarios where textual data and images are managed and retrieved in-the-field as well as some desktop scenarios in the context of collaborative e-Learning. Within this scope, one critical issue arises while adding and updating textual information via the collaborative interface, which can be cumbersome in mobile scenarios. To solve this problem, we integrated another popular concept into our solution approach, Microblogging. Thus, the information pushed via short messages from mobile clients or microblogging tools to our m-Learning environment enables the creation of Wiki-Micropages as basis for subsequent collaborative learning scenarios.

User-centric Privacy Framework: Integrating Legal, Technological and Human Aspects into User-Adapting Systems

Victor Manuel Garcia-Barrios

This paper summarizes our most relevant results of research and development work regarding a solution proposal for a privacy concept called User-centric Privacy Framework (UPF). In particular, our work focuses on user-adapting systems and follows three objectives: elaborate an adaptable privacy statement that complies with well-known privacy practices and with legal regulations; utilize privacy-enhancing technologies for single-user and group-based activities; provide user-controlled privacy concerns. UPF is an integrative solution proposal that considers main aspects of the three interrelated and highly relevant points of view: legal aspects (lawyer’s language); technological aspects (technician’s language); user-centric design aspects (user’s language). To give a practical example, we present the applicability of UPF focusing on the field of Self-Directed Work-Integrated Learning systems.

Towards an advanced modeling system applying a service-based approach

Christian Gütl; Victor Manuel Garcia-Barrios

Based on the overall aims of the AdeLE (adaptive e-learning with eye-tracking) project, and in particular motivated by the decision of using a strictly separated systems architecture, the requirements for the modeling system and its implementation as a micro-service-oriented architecture are addressed in this paper. Furthermore, experiences and lessons learned as well as an approach for a more advanced modeling system in the context of the AdeLE research project is discussed.

Personalized Systems Need Adaptable Privacy Statements! How to Make Privacy-related Legal Aspects Usable and Retraceable

Victor Manuel Garcia-Barrios; Ariane Hemmelmayr; Helmut Leitner

This paper presents a solution proposal for the design of usable privacy-enhancing practices in personalization-pertinent systems. In particular, the focus is set on two issues: (i) the design of an Adaptable Privacy Statement that complies with well-known privacy principles and legal demands, and (ii) the description of how to link such an adaptable statement with user interface functions that enhance the comprehension and control of the privacy-critical features of the system. Our proposal is part of our User-centric Privacy Framework, an integrative methodology that considers the main aspects of the three interrelated and highly relevant privacy points of view: legal compliance, technical feasibility, and user-centric design. Exemplarily, we present the applicability of our proposal by focusing on the field of Self-Directed Work-Integrated Learning systems.
