[1,1′;3′,1′′]Terphenyl-4′,5′-dicarboxylic acid derivatives were prepared from 1,3-dienic δ-sultone 4,6-diphenyl-[1,2]oxathiine 2,2-dioxide via Diels-Alder/retro-Diels-Alder reaction with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate under thermal, microwave or high-pressure activation.

Thermal and high pressure intramolecular Diels–Alder reaction of vinylsulfonamides

Vinylsulfonamides with a furan, carbocyclic, semicyclic or acyclic 1,3-diene moiety are synthetized via a domino elimination–amidation reaction of 2-chloroethanesulfonyl chloride. Intramolecular Diels–Alder reaction of these vinylsulfonamides with thermal (toluene, 110 °C) or high pressure (dichloromethane, 13 kbar) activation provides efficient access to a range of γ- and δ-sultams following a 2–3 d long synthetic procedure. Enantiopure sultams are readily obtained from N-1-phenylethyl substituted vinylsulfonamides.

A simple and general synthesis of 3-acyl-5-alkyl(aryl)isoxazoles by reaction of terminal alkynes with nitrates in acetic acid in the presence of SO3 or alkaline salts is described.

The reaction of alkynes with dimethyl sulfoxide, halogenated hydrocarbons and sulfur trioxide

1,2-Disubstituted alkynes are converted in CCl4 or CHCl3 with dimethyl sulfoxide in the presence of sulfur trioxide into the corresponding (E, Z)-1-chloro-2-methylthio-ethenes. The reaction of 1,2-diphenylethyne with CHBr3, DMSO, and dioxane sulfotrioxide gives (E, Z)-1,2-dimethylthio-1,2-diphenylethene.
