Grey Relational Analysis of Micro-EDM Machining of Ti-6Al-4V Alloy

Vijay Kumar Meena; Man Singh Azad

In the present work, micro-electric discharge machining (micro-EDM) of Ti-6Al-V alloy with tungsten carbide electrode has been performed. Ti-6Al-4V, which is difficult to machine via conventional machining techniques, however, can be easily machined via EDM machining, with careful selection of machining parameters for getting optimum results. In this study, the effect of various input parameters; current, voltage, frequency, and width, on output parameter viz., metal removal rate (MRR), tool wear rate (TWR), and overcut (OC) are studied. Grey relational analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) have been performed to optimize the levels of input parameters.

Effect of flushing condition on deep hole micro-EDM drilling

Vijay Kumar Meena; Man Singh Azad; Souren Mitra

This paper describes the effect of various flushing conditions on the accuracy of deep holes drilled via micro electrical discharge machining (EDM) machining. Copper tubes were used for deep hole drilling in copper. Various dielectric flushing conditions (side jet flushing, through flushing, through flushing combined with side jet flushing, immersion flushing) were evaluated for their effect on the diameter variation, overcut and circularity at workpiece entrance and exit of deep hole drilled. Through flushing and immersion flushing were observed suitable for deep hole drilling whereas side flushing and its combination with through flushing were observed unsuitable for higher aspect ratios holes.

Electrochemical sensing of nitro-aromatic explosive compounds using silver nanoparticles modified electrochips

In the present study an electrochemical deposition method for glycine-stabilized silver nanoparticles (Glyc-AgNPs) at screen printed electrodes is shown in a single step with minimal sample preparation. The advantage of this method is the direct assembly of Glyc-AgNPs at the electrode surface without external modification. The Glyc-AgNPs were characterized for their size, crystallinity and redox activity. The nanoparticles were further used for electrochemical sensing of 2,4,6-tri-nitro toluene (TNT) and di-nitro benzene (DNB), i.e. nitro-aromatic explosive compounds using differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The Glyc-AgNP modified electrochip revealed significantly more sensitivity towards TNT as compared to DNB, as evident from the current intensity obtained due to the electrochemical reduction process. Earlier studies have suggested that tri-nitro compounds are more easily reduced as compared to mono- and di-nitro compounds, which is hypothesized as the main reason for the observed sensitivity for TNT. A linear response was observed in the range from 1 × 10−10 to 0.1 M for TNT, and 1 × 10−7 to 0.1 M for DNB. The results obtained with spiked samples provided solid grounds for future field trials with the developed sensing device.

This article evaluates the effect of stress variation on adult femur following total hip replacement using musculoskeletal-based finite element analysis. The aim was to study the changes in stress distribution in the femur after total hip replacement by providing simulated in vivo loading and boundary conditions. The loading and boundary conditions were generated using a musculoskeletal modelling software ‘AnyBody’ and were applied on femur model, generated from the computed tomography (CT) scan data for standing posture of male patient. The results showed considerable variation in stress distribution pattern in the femur before and after total hip replacement, the metallic implant taking major loads of human body and transferring very less loads to the femur.

Developments in the Electrochemical Bionanosensors for the Predictive Diagnosis of Prostate and Breast Cancer

Suman Singh; Akash Deep; Girish C. Mohanta; Vijay Kumar Meena

The abnormal and uncontrolled cell growth due to an accumulation of specific genetic and epigenetic defects is referred as “Cancer.” The genetic defects can originate from both environment and hereditary. This unregulated cell growth leads to the formation of a tumor. As the cancer progresses, the tumor begins to spread to other body organs and systems and this spreading is sometimes so fast that by the time of cancer detection, it becomes incurable. It is reported that, in 2004, about 7.4 million people lost their lives and this number is expected to increase to 12 million by 2030. As per the World Health Organisation (WHO) documentation, 30% of people could have been saved if their cancer could be detected earlier (www.who.int/, 2010). Among various cancers, prostate and breast cancer are most common type of cancers, occurring in men and women, respectively. Prostate cancer is the second largest cause among all cancer-related deaths in male population and breast cancer contributes to about 23% of the cancer cases, worldwide (Mahfoud et al. 2014).
