Pharmacological Effects of Atorvastatin in Platelet Function and Plaque Rupture

Platelets are a prime reason for causing cardiovascular disease (CVD). After atherosclerotic plaque rupture, platelets can form pathogenic, formation of blood clot which leads to various cardiovascular events. The beneficial effect of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-Co-A) reductase inhibitors reduces CVDs clinically. The objective of this review is the pharmacological benefit of atorvastatin in CVD by platelets and plaque rupture due to high levels of cholesterol.

Role of Atorvastatin on Endothelial Cells and Endothelial Progenitor Cells in Cardiovascular Disease

The endothelium plays a key role in providing appropriate haemostatic balance. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are involved in the maintenance of endothelial haemostasis and in the process of forming new vessels. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is associated with reduced numbers and dysfunction of endothelial cells (ECs) and EPCs. The beneficial effects of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (HMG-Co-A) reductase inhibitors (atorvastatin), helps to restore of EPCs and improvement in vascular function. This review underlines the pleiotropic effects of atorvastatin on ECs and EPCs.

Neuroprotective Benefits of Atorvastatin in Dementia and Stroke

Dementia and stroke are the major health problem often occurs in older individuals aged 65 or more. There are many studies confirm that cholesterol might be involved in the pathogenesis of dementia and stroke. Atorvastatin, broadly used to lower cholesterol in coronary heart disease, are viable medications in decreasing the danger of dementia and stroke. Use of atorvastatin for prolonged period seems to be effective for the prevention of dementia and stroke. The objective of this review is to focuses the pharmacological benefit of atorvastatin in dementia and stroke.
