Adventure-based therapy has grown in both scope and popularity. These groups are frequently utilized in the treatment of adolescents with behavioral or substance abuse issues. Less evident is the use of this modality with other populations. Described here is a personal account of the authors participation in a wilderness-based group for women. Women of Courage is a course designed by Outward Bound specifically for women who self-describe as survivors of abuse. The program includes either a backpacking or canoeing component, a solo camping experience, and the opportunity to rock climb.

Counselor education departments are often required to meet multiple accreditation standards that include assessment of individual student learning. Additionally, faculty in counselor education departments are responsible for acting as professional gatekeepers. The authors propose a model for assessment of individual student potential at the time of program admission. In addition, a comprehensive assessment process applied as students make the transition into clinical fieldwork is described.
