How do different types of intragroup conflict affect group potency in virtual compared with face-to-face teams? A longitudinal study

The number of organizations using teamwork is increasing. In this context, group potency has emerged as a key construct in group research. Moreover, in the last decades, information and communication technologies (ICT) have allowed organizations to form virtual teams. Consequently, a considerable amount of research has analysed the functioning of virtual teams. We focus on intragroup conflict as a relevant antecedent of potency in computer-mediated communication groups. Specifically, the aim of this research is to examine the role of ICT in the relationship between intragroup conflict and group potency in a longitudinal study. A laboratory experiment was carried out comparing 44 groups working in two communication media (face-to-face and computer-mediated communication). The groups developed a project over a one-month period. The results show that communication media play a moderator role between intragroup conflict (relationship and task conflict) and group potency. Implications of these results are discussed.

Análisis de la interacción grupal a través de medidas de observación en comunicación mediada

ResumenEn la actualidad, las nuevas tecnologias estan favoreciendo la formacion de grupos de trabajo distribuidos. Estos grupos pueden tener un caracter relativamente permanente como un equipo editorial, o un equipo de diseno de distintos departamentos de una multinacional. Los Psicologos del Trabajo y de las Organizaciones estan retados a proporcionar teorias y modelos para el analisis y diseno de estos grupos. ResumenLa psicologia de los grupos ha generado un amplio volumen de investigacion que ha permitido comprender tanto la estructura como los procesos de grupo (Levine y Moreland, 1990). Esta linea de trabajo resulta de interes en una situacion en la que el rapido desarrollo tecnologico esta dando lugar a nuevas situaciones de interaccion grupal. En este ambito, el estudio de estos procesos psicosociales ha sido abordado fundamentalmente mediante la utilizacion de medidas de autoinforme. Team Feedback Intervention and Team Learning in Virtual Teams: A Moderated Mediation Model of Team Cohesion and Personality

Scholars and practitioners agree that virtual teams (VTs) have become commonplace in today’s digital workplace. Relevant literature argues that learning constitutes a significant contributor to team member satisfaction and performance, and that, at least in face-to-face teams, team cohesion fosters team learning. Given the additional challenges VTs face, e.g. geographical dispersion, which are likely to have a negative influence on cohesion, in this paper we shed light on the relationship between team cohesion and team learning. We adopted a quantitative approach and studied 54 VTs in our quest to understand the role of feedback in mediating this relationship and, more specifically, the role of personality traits in moderating the indirect effect of team feedback and guided reflection intervention on team learning through team cohesion within the VT context. Our findings highlight the importance of considering aspects related to the team composition when devising intervention strategies for VTs, and provide empirical support for an interactionist model between personality and emergent states such as cohesion.
