The Ross-Konno procedure, applied to neonates with severe left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) obstruction, offers a satisfactory solution in fully releasing the LVOT gradient, and in replacing the aortic valve with a pulmonary autograft with an excellent growth potential. We reported on three recent neonatal cases.

Complete ectopia cordis is a very rare condition. With few exceptions, it is uniformly considered fatal. Death usually occurs within the first days of life as a result of infection, cardiac failure, or hypoxemia. We report the case of a male infant with Cantrell’s syndrome. There was complete thoracic exteriorization of the heart, with cephalic orientation of the cardiac apex (Figure 1). The cardiac surface was covered by …

A newborn male was transferred for severe cyanosis and suspected transposition of the great arteries and ventricular septal defect (VSD). An emergency balloon septostomy was performed. The position and commitment of VSD and great arteries were more precisely defined by echocardiography. There was double-outlet left ventricle (DOLV) with doubly committed VSD, l-malposition of the great arteries, and pulmonary stenosis. The infundibular septum was virtually absent. A modified Blalock–Taussig shunt was inserted before a Rastelli-type corrective surgery was performed at 20 months of age. The VSD was closed, the pulmonary trunk was transsected, …

We are describing a most unusual variant of aortic arch interruption. The ascending aorta was atretic above the sinutubular junction forming a blind-ending pouch. The coronary arteries were the only vessels arising from the aortic trunk. All the brachiocephalic vessels were perfused in retrograde fashion through the arterial duct. The aortic valve itself was dysplastic, stenotic, and permitted severe regurgitation. There was no subaortic obstruction. A modified first stage Norwood palliation was performed. Due to myocardial insufficiency transthoracic extracorporeal membrane oxygenation had to be commenced at the end of surgery. Unfortunately the child died due to severe intracranial hemorrhage.
