Corrosion of iron and carbon steel surfaces within crevices formed by a thin piece of glass, was assessed using a video microscopy, current density mapping, and corrosion potential measurements. Corrosion initiated adjacent to the glass and spread slowly to other parts of the freely exposed areas. For many days, no corrosion was found under the glass in simulated tap water, NaCl, and Na{sub 2}SO{sub 4} solutions. An explanation for the protection of the crevice has been suggested whereby alkalization with partial reduction of the passive oxide protects the surface under the glass from corrosion.

Though the anodic reactions of metal and alloy dissolution(1–5) have been extensively studied in solutions of various pHs, the corresponding cathodic processes have received little attention in the neutral pH range.(6–8) Generally, under practical conditions, the cathodic reaction of hydrogen evolution in acid solutions and the oxygen reduction reaction in neutral and alkali solutions are the main cathodic depolarization reactions.
