We demonstrate that fluorous metal-organic frameworks (FMOFs) are highly hydrophobic porous materials with a high capacity and affinity to C(6)-C(8) hydrocarbons of oil components. FMOF-1 exhibits reversible adsorption with a high capacity for n-hexane, cyclohexane, benzene, toluene, and p-xylene, with no detectable water adsorption even at near 100% relative humidity, drastically outperforming activated carbon and zeolite porous materials. FMOF-2, obtained from annealing FMOF-1, shows enlarged cages and channels with double toluene adsorption vs FMOF-1 based on crystal structures. The results suggest great promise for FMOFs in applications such as removal of organic pollutants from oil spills or ambient humid air, hydrocarbon storage and transportation, water purification, etc. under practical working conditions.

New multi-modular donor-acceptor conjugates featuring zinc porphyrin (ZnP), catechol-chelated boron dipyrrin (BDP), triphenylamine (TPA) and fullerene (C(60)), or naphthalenediimide (NDI) have been newly designed and synthesized as photosynthetic antenna and reaction-center mimics. The X-ray structure of triphenylamine-BDP is also reported. The wide-band capturing polyad revealed ultrafast energy-transfer (k(ENT) =1.0 × 10(12) s(-1)) from the singlet excited BDP to the covalently linked ZnP owing to close proximity and favorable orientation of the entities. Introducing either fullerene or naphthalenediimide electron acceptors to the TPA-BDP-ZnP triad through metal-ligand axial coordination resulted in electron donor-acceptor polyads whose structures were revealed by spectroscopic, electrochemical and computational studies. Excitation of the electron donor, zinc porphyrin resulted in rapid electron-transfer to coordinated fullerene or naphthalenediimide yielding charge separated ion-pair species. The measured electron transfer rate constants from femtosecond transient spectral technique in non-polar toluene were in the range of 5.0 × 10(9)-3.5 × 10(10) s(-1). Stabilization of the charge-separated state in these multi-modular donor-acceptor polyads is also observed to certain level.

We report herein a simple, additive- and metal-free, photoinduced, dual C-H/C-X borylation of chloro-, bromo-, and iodoarenes. The reaction produces 1,2- and 1,3-diborylarenes on gram scales under batch and continuous flow conditions. The regioselectivity of the dual C-H/C-X borylation is determined by the solvent and the substituents in the parent haloarenes.

Novel photosynthetic reaction center model compounds of the type donor2 -donor1 -acceptor, composed of phenothiazine, BF2 -chelated dipyrromethene (BODIPY), and fullerene, respectively, have been newly synthesized using multistep synthetic methods. X-ray structures of three of the phenothiazine-BODIPY intermediate compounds have been solved to visualize the substitution effect caused by the phenothiazine on the BODIPY macrocycle. Optical absorption and emission, computational, and differential pulse voltammetry studies were systematically performed to establish the molecular integrity of the triads. The N-substituted phenothiazine was found to be easier to oxidize by 60 mV compared to the C-substituted analogue. The geometry and electronic structures were obtained by B3LYP/6-31G(dp) calculations (for H, B, N, and O) and B3LYP/6-31G(df) calculations (for S) in vacuum, followed by a single-point calculation in benzonitrile utilizing the polarizable continuum model (PCM). The HOMO-1, HOMO, and LUMO were, respectively, on the BODIPY, phenothiazine and fullerene entities, which agreed well with the site of electron transfer determined from electrochemical studies. The energy-level diagram deduced from these data helped in elucidating the mechanistic details of the photochemical events. Excitation of BODIPY resulted in ultrafast electron transfer to produce PTZ-BODIPY(.+) -C60 (.-) ; subsequent hole shift resulted in PTZ(.+) -BODIPY-C60 (.-) charge-separated species. The return of the charge-separated species was found to be solvent dependent. In nonpolar solvents the PTZ(.+) -BODIPY-C60 (.-) species populated the (3) C60 * prior to returning to the ground state, while in polar solvent no such process was observed due to relative positioning of the energy levels. The (1) BODIPY* generated radical ion-pair in these triads persisted for few nanoseconds due to electron transfer/hole-shift mechanism.

We discovered a rare phenomenon wherein a thieno-pyrrole fused BODIPY dye (SBDPiR690) generates singlet oxygen without heavy halogen atom substituents. SBDPiR690 generates both singlet oxygen and fluorescence. To our knowledge, this is the first example of such a finding. To establish a structure-photophysical property relationship, we prepared SBDPiR analogs with electron-withdrawing groups at the para-position of the phenyl groups. The electron-withdrawing groups increased the HOMO-LUMO energy gap and singlet oxygen generation. Among the analogs, SBDPiR688, a CF3 analog, had an excellent dual functionality of brightness (82290 m(-1)  cm(-1) ) and phototoxic power (99170 m(-1)  cm(-1) ) comparable to those of Pc 4, due to a high extinction coefficient (211 000 m(-1)  cm(-1) ) and balanced decay (Φflu =0.39 and ΦΔ =0.47). The dual functionality of the lead compound SBDPiR690 was successfully applied to preclinical optical imaging and for PDT to effectively control a subcutaneous tumor.

A series of phenothiazine-fulleropyrrolidine (PTZ-C60) dyads having fullerene either at the C-3 aromatic ring position or at the N-position of phenothiazine macrocycle were newly synthesized and characterized. Photoinduced electron transfer leading to PTZ(•+)-C60(•-) charge-separated species was established from studies involving femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. Because of the close proximity of the donor and acceptor entities, the C-3 ring substituted PTZ-C60 dyads revealed faster charge separation and charge recombination processes than that observed in the dyad functionalized through the N-position. Next, inverted organic bulk heterojunction (BHJ) solar cells were constructed using the dyads in place of traditionally used [6,6]-phenyl-C61- butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and an additional electron donor material poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT). The performance of the C-3 ring substituted PTZ-C60 dyad having a polyethylene glycol substituent produced a power conversion efficiency of 3.5% under inverted bulk heterojunction (BHJ) configuration. This was attributed to optimal BHJ morphology between the polymer and the dyad, which was further promoted by the efficient intramolecular charge separation and relatively slow charge recombination promoted by the dyad within the BHJ structure. The present finding demonstrate PTZ-C60 dyads as being good prospective materials for building organic photovoltaic devices.

Cuprous oxide (Cu2O) nanorod arrays have been prepared via a novel templated electrodeposition process and were characterized for their photocatalytic behavior in nonaqueous photoelectrochemical cells. Zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorod films serve as sacrificial templates for the in situ formation of polymer nanopore membranes on transparent conductive oxide substrates. Nitrocellulose and poly(lactic acid) are effective membrane-forming polymers that exhibit different modes of template formation, with nitrocellulose forming conformal coatings on the ZnO surface while poly(lactic acid) acts as an amorphous pore-filling material. Robust template formation is sensitive to the seeding method used to prepare the precursor ZnO nanorod films. Photoelectrochemical cells prepared from electrodeposited Cu2O films using methyl viologen as a redox shuttle in acetonitrile electrolyte exhibit significant charge recombination that can be partially suppressed by a combination of surface passivation methods. Surface-passivated nanostructured Cu2O films show enhanced photocurrent relative to planar electrodeposited Cu2O films of similar thickness. We have obtained the highest photocurrent ever reported for electrodeposited Cu2O in a nonaqueous photoelectrochemical cell.

Organoborylazadipyrromethenes were synthesized from free base and fluoroborylazadipyrromethenes and characterized with regard to their structural and electronic properties. B-N bond lengths, along with photophysical and redox behavior, appear dependent on the effective electronegativity at the boron atom as tuned by its substituents, with stronger electronegativity correlating to a shorter B-N bond length, red-shifted absorbance, enhanced fluorescence lifetime and yield, and positively shifted redox potentials.

Tetracyclic dihydronaphthalene derivatives via gold-catalyzed aminative homodimerization of ortho-alkynylbenzaldehydes.

Aaron A. Ruch; Fanji Kong; Vladimir N. Nesterov; LeGrande M. Slaughter

Gold(i) catalyzes domino homodimerization of o-alkynylbenzaldehydes via a sequence of 6-endo-dig-cyclization, amine addition, and [4+2] cycloaddition involving two bicyclic intermediates. The resulting products integrate medicinally relevant 1,2-dihydronaphthalene and isochromene moieties into a single amine-substituted tetracyclic framework.
