Capparis gialaiensis Sy, a new species of Capparaceae from Vietnam is described and illustrated. It is morphologically closest to C. longistipitata, but differs in length of thorns, filaments and gynophore, shape of the leaf and shape and size of petals. Color photographs, a table comparing the new species with closely allied species and a key are provided to facilitate species identification.

Genetic diversity of Panax vietnamensis var. fuscidiscus K. Komatsu, s. Zhu & S.Q. cai population in western north of vietnam detected by inter simple sequence repeat markers

Le Ngoc Trieu; Nong Van Duy; Vu Tien Chinh; Tran Van Tien

Panax vietnamensis var. fuscidiscus is a precious medicinal plant which was recently discovered in Sin Ho and Muong Te district, Lai Chau province of Vietnam. Over exploitation of the species in the native habitat poses a serious threat to its existence. Adequate information on the nature and the extent of genetic diversity in this important species is required for developing suitable strategy for its conservation. In this study, inter simple sequence repeat markers were employed to investigate the genetic diversity and variability of 46 individuals belonging to a naturally distributed population of this variety in Vietnam. Genetic diversity at the population level was high (He = 0.2300, I = 0.3665, and PPB = 96.98 %). The group of mature individuals possessed the higher genetic diversity (HeO = 0.2291, IO = 0.3563, and PPBO = 84.34 %) as compared to group of young individuals (HeY = 0.2086, Iy = 0.3291, and PPBY = 81.5 %). The intergroup gene differentiation was high (GST = 0.0499) with the genetic distance among groups was 0.0298. The similarity coefficient among mature individuals was more moderate (Maximum = 0.873, Minimum = 0.614 and Average = 0.741) than among young individuals (Maximum = 0.916, Minimum = 0.596 and Average = 0.759). Otherwise, the number of discovered individuals was small, distribution area is narrow habitats, and the population showed the reduction in genetic diversity due to the human affects in the habitat and over-exploitation. Results on genetic diversity and variability showed that the investigated population has coped with the risk of decline and needed to be protected.

Porandra microphylla Y. Wan (Commelinaceae): A new distributional record for Vietnam

Vu Tien Chinh; Tran Thi Phuong Anh; Bui Hong Quang

Porandra microphylla Y. Wan, is a newly recorded species for the flora of Vietnam. This species was collected from Lai Chau and Vinh Phuc province of the country. Morphologically, P. microphylla is closely related to Porandra scandens D.Y. Hong, but differs by its smaller and abaxially glabrous leaves and oblong or subglobose anthers.

Jasminum vietnamense (Oleaceae), a New Species from Vietnam

Bui Hong Quang; Ritesh Kumar Choudhary; Vu Tien Chinh; Nguyen Van Du; Joongku Lee

Jasminum vietnamense B.H. Quang & Joongku Lee, sp. nova (Oleaceae) from Quang Nam province of Vietnam is described and illustrated. It is morphologically similar to J. adenophyllum, J. fuchsiifolium and J. pierranum, but differs from them by having a comparatively smaller calyx tube, absence of domatia at vein axils of the leaf, and by considerably smaller bracts.

Study on the section Trifoliolata DC. (Jasminum L. - Oleaceae Juss.) in Vietnam

Bui Hong Quang; Tran Thi Phuong Anh; Vu Tien Chinh

Jasminum L. compcises about 200 species in the world including 5 sections: Jasminum Green, Alternifolia DC., Trifoliolata DC., Primulina Green and Unifoliolata DC. they distributed in tropical and subtropical in South East Asia, Europa, Australia and Africa. Section Trifoliolata DC. was published by De Candolle (1844) with the typus Jasminum didymum G. Forst. and characterized by leaves 3-foliolate, terminal leaflet slightly larger than or equal to lateral leaflets or sometimes, lateral leaflets reduced. There are about 10 species and 5 subspecies in this Section in the world. In Vietnam, there are 1 species and 2 subspecies in section Trifoliolata DC. recorded. In this paper to we introduced Jasminum sinense Hemsl. in sections Trifoliolata DC. as a new record for flora of Vietnam. This species is found in Ha Giang (Pho Bang) and has characteristic of Trifoliolata DC. section such leaves 3-foliolate. Jasminum sinense was closed to Jasminum brevilobum by lateral leaflets reduced, leaves and calyx pilose (different with Jasminum lanceolaria subsp. lanceolaria and Jasminum lanceolaria subsp. scortechinii by terminal leaflet slightly larger than or equal to lateral leaflets, leaves and calyx glabrous). But Jasminum sinense characterized by calyx lobes linear, 1-5 mm long. In this article, we introduce nomenclature, key to species, morphology and illustration, distribution and research specimen of three species of Trifoliolata DC. section ( Jasminum L.) from Vietnam.

Genus Pellacalyx - a new record for flora of Vietnam

Vu Tien Chinh; Do Van Hai; Bui Hong Quang

In the world, Pellacalyx with 7-8 species distributed in China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand. In Vietnam, it is the first time, we confirm genus Pellacalyx distributed in Vietnam, this genus with 1 species Pellacalyx yunnanensis H. H. Hu. In Vietnam, genera Pellacalyx and Carallia are distinguished from other genera of Rhizophoraceae by living form and germination of seeds. The other genera with some important characters as “trees of inland ecosystems; seeds not germinating while attached to parent plant” and Pellacalyx and Carallia with some important characters as “trees or shrubs of coastal mangrove ecosystems; seeds germinating and hypocotyls growing from fruit while attached to parent plant”. Pellacalyx is distinguished from Carallia by some characters: Carallia : Stipules twisted, overlapping; stamens attached to disk. Pellacalyx : Stipules flat, free; stamens attached to mouth of calyx tube. We named Pellacalyx yunnanensis “Duoc bau ruou can” by two main reasons: Living form of the species is the same to Carallia - Duoc can. Calyx urceolate. Some main characters of Pellacalyx yunnanensis : Trees (3-)15 m tall. Branchlets thick, with hairs. Leave opposite or whorled, oblanceolate, oblong or lanceolate, 13-20 ´ 4.5-6.5 cm, secondary veins 8-9 pairs, base cuneate, margin serrulate, apex shortly acuminate. Pedicel ca. 2 cm, glabrous. Calyx urceolate, 6-7 lobes. Petals 6-7, white. Fruit subglobose, ca. 1.5 cm in diam. Seeds numerous, brownish black, oblong.
