Abstract It has only recently been established that in irridiated and additively colored MgO crystals both the F+ center (an oxygen-ion vacancy with one trapped electron) and the neutral F center (an oxygen-ion vacancy with two trapped electrons) absorb light near 5.0 eV. In these crystals excitation with 5.0 eV light or X-rays produces an emission band at 3.13 eV, which can be correlated with ESR measurements of the F+ center. In neutron irradiated crystals, additional emission bands are observed which are attributed to defect cluster centers. In these crystals we find a luminescence band at 1.55 eV which is due to the effect which produces the 2.16 eV absorption band.
