Abstract In 70 000 photos taken in BEBC during an experiment in which the 400 GeV proton beam of the CERN SPS was dumped into a massive Cu target 820 m upstream of BEBC, 70 interactions induced by neutral primaries above 10 GeV were observed. In 11 events the secondary charged lepton is an e − , in four events an e + . This number of electron events cannot be due to electron neutrinos from conventional sources (K, Λ, Σ − decays). The flux of the additional (prompt) neutrinos is evaluated. Possible origins are discussed in terms of charmed particles, τs, and as yet undiscovered particles. Limits are given on axion production.

Abstract A beam dump experiment was performed in the CERN Gargamelle neutrino facility in order to look for new heavy penetrating neutral particles. Limits are determined for the mass and lifetimes of such particles, and also the cross section for their production.

Several events have been observed in neutrino interactions which have an e+ and a K°s decay in the final state along with the conventional μ−. A discussion of their detection and relation to dimuon events will be presented. The significance of the associated strange particles and related kinematic quantities will be discussed.

Search for new phenomena associated with high energy neutrinos using the quadrupole triplet beam

U. Camerini; W. F. Fry; J. Mapp; J. von Krogh; D.D. Reeder; D. Cline; R. Loveless

The authors propose to take one million pictures of high energy neutrinos in an approximately 20% mixture of Neon and Helium using the FNAL 15 foot bubble chamber exposed to the quadrupole triplet focused neutrino beam with the EMI. Their experience in E-28A has shown that the capability of recording and analyzing high multiplicity, multiple gamma conversions, secondary neutron interactions, and high energy electrons makes this instrument uniquely useful in searching for new phenomena in neutrino interactions.
