measure specific variables or &dquo;dimensions.&dquo; The items within each group designed to be as homogeneous as possible. This plan was followed to allow the addition of weights for responses over several homogeneous items with the expectation of obtaining greater reliability of measurement. The item groups were designed to have a high degree of internal consistency and to be as independent of one another as possible. As might be expected, the questionnaire dimensions as designed

THE research to be reported here was part of a larger program designed to discover some of the variables related to organizational effectiveness ( I , 2, 3, 4, 8, 12, 13).1 In a recent study at the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation certain questionnaire dimensions administered to supervisory personnel in 29 separate departments were validated against several criteria of effectiveness to determine if individuals in the “more effective’’ subunits respond to the items differently from those in the “less effective” units. The questionnaire items were grouped into “dimensions” designed to measure specific variables. An attempt was made to make the several dimensions as independent and homogeneous as possible. However, it was found on trying out the items that the dimensions, as designed, fell short of complete independence and homogeneity. The present paper is concerned with the procedures and results of a program undertaken to improve the questionnaire dimensions and to gain information concerning their interrelationships. The report will be divided into two sections. The first part will
