ditary characteristic, and is probably inherited as a Mendelian dominant m men (Baur et al., 1931 ; Osborn, 1916) and possibly as a recessive in women (Osborn ; Snyder and Yingling, 1935). Here, too, the difference m metabohc and endocrine states of the male and female probably accounts for the difference in manifestation of the inherited tendency in the two sexes. The genes causing hypertrichosis and baldness may or may not be identical. Such hypotheses could only be proven by the careful collection of pedigrees of persons showing one or both of the above characters. Further work, too, needs to be done on the precise androgenic levels required before these traits manifest themselves in any particular individual.
