Conclusions A new and successful method of uretero-ileal-cutaneous implantation is described. The method offers advantages: (1) no contact of ureteral orifices with the fecal stream, which should reduce the incidence of infection; (2) it avoids the undesirable features of a wet colostomy, and should be applicable to the patient undergoing pelvic viscerectomy.

Since March, 1972, the Emergency Department of Metropolitan Hospital Center, New York Medical College, has had a fully equipped operating room for the management of patients in critical condition and shock. Sixty patients over a three year period have undergone emergency surgery there with a survival rate of 46.8%. Five surgeons cover the emergency department 24 hours per day and four backup surgeons are available during peak periods. The type of injuries and corresponding survival rate, plus lapsed time between injury and treatment along with other data, are given for the 60 cases.
