Tularemia in children

Walter T. Hughes

Eight of 50 hospitalized cases of tularemia occurred among children. Of these 8 cases, 6 were of the ulceroglandular, 1 of the oculoglandular, and 1 of the oropharyngeal type. All presented with fever and regional adenopathy relative to the site of infection. The incidence of tularemia is greatest during rabbit hunting season since the rabbit is the most frequent source of infection. Streptomycin is the drug of choice. Therapy initiated after 2 weeks of illness may be less effective in shortening the course of disease than earlier antibiotic treatment. Recovery is usually complete without residua.

Systemic Blastomycosis in Childhood Case Report and Review

Walter T. Hughes; Sophia Franco; Myung Hi Kim Oh

In a 21-month-old infant with systemic blastomycosis blood and bone marrow specimens were found reliable sources for culture, whereas sputum cultures were negative. A clinical cure followed hydroxystilbamidine therapy. Family members and neighbors tested for serum precipitins had no evidence of infection, past or present. The true prevalence of blastomycosis in the pediatric population of the United States is not known.

Acute Pancreatitis and Hypoglycemia

L.R. Laraya-Cuasay; Richard Wolfe; Walter T. Hughes

Although hyperglycemia is a better rec ognized feature of acute pancreatitis, hypo glycemia may and does occur at times. Cli nicians should be aware of this possibility. These authors add three cases to the lit erature. Two patients died with acute hem orrhagic pancreatitis; the third is alive after an attack associated with mumps.

A method of collecting micro blood samples for agar gel diffusion analysis

Walter T. Hughes

A case of varicella bullosa is described. Unfortunately, fluid from the bullae could not be obtained for bacterial or viral culture. However, there was no evidence on clinical grounds that the lesions represented an impe:iginous infection. This tends to confirm the impression of Saslaw and associates 1 regarding the benign nature of this disease. We wish to express our gratitude to Dr. Sidney Gellis for his kindness in reviewing the manuscript.
