Sobihatun Nur Abdul Salam; Wan Ahmad Jaafar Wan Yahaya; Azillah-Mohd Ali

This paper is focusing the potential use of persuasive design principles in motivating children’s dental anxiety. The main intention of the paper is to emphasize an attempt of how persuasive design principle can be designed into educational material using CD ROM based multimedia learning environment to overcome the CDA. Firstly, we describe a problem domain which discuss about the universal feeling of CDA and secondly the current practices in handling those negative feelings. Thirdly, the conceptual background of PMLE and how the principle has been applied in designing the information interfaces and presentation of a persuasive multimedia learning environment (PMLE) are described. Fourthly, an experimental design was used to validate the effects of prototype which assessed children dental anxiety level before and after the demonstration and utilization of a PMLE. Primary school children age between seven and nine years old are selected as respondents. Fifthly, the result of the study has revealed the feedback from children regarding baseline test and children dental anxiety test. It shows how by using persuasive design principles as an overall strategy in designing PMLE was able to motivate children feelings towards dental anxiety and could let the children behave in a good manner for dental visit in the future.

A Preliminary Investigation: Children's Awareness of Child Sexual Abuse in Malaysia

Azliza Othman; Wan Ahmad Jaafar Wan Yahaya

This paper reports the feedback from respondents in relation to the implementation of Persuasive Multimedia Learning Awareness in preventing child sexual abuse in Malaysia. A qualitative method using unstructured interview has been selected as a technique of gathering information in order to identify the current children awareness toward sexual abuse and current child sexual abuse prevention programs implemented in Malaysia. Four respondents have been selected to participate in this interview: a representative from the Department of Social Welfare, government agency involved in making Child Protection Policy; a representative from Womens Centre for Change (WCC), Penang, an NGO involved in prevention program, a representative from Family Law Division, Department of Islamic Affairs, State of Kedah (JAIK) and a primary school teacher. The findings from this preliminary investigation confirm that in Malaysia, there is a need to educate children about child sexual abuse and there is still lacking of educational materials that utilize multimedia and computer technology that teach children about personal safety. In conclusion, the implementation of Persuasive Multimedia Learning need to be designed and developed to educate children and to increase their awareness level of any situations that might negatively affect their personal safety and to provide guidelines for the children on how to act appropriately when these situations arise.

Statistics of Malaysia Social Welfare Department reported that the majority of persons with visual impaired are adults. This group is more susceptible towards the main chronic illnesses in Malaysia. Support ought to be provided through various platforms, and one of the potential medium is through mobile application or specifically known as mobile assistive technology. This paper reports the preliminary study which investigates the development of a mobile health application which was designed to disseminate information regarding major chronic illness in Malaysia; diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease and kidney disease. The interface developed is compatible with renowned software; JAWS and NVDA which can support the navigation for those with visual impairment. 2 respondents are chosen in this preliminary study. 1 respondent who is totally blind and 1 respondent with low vision were interviewed. The evaluation revealed that this mobile application fulfilled the usability aspect; it was confirmed to be easy to use and supported with suitable multimedia elements. As there is no existing mobile health application to support visual impaired audience in Malay Language, this study could be considered a groundbreaking attempt to provide the mechanism. It is with the aim of the study that the mobile health application would have the potential to be used to support this group.

The effectiveness of signaling principle in virtual reality courseware towards achievement of transfer learning among students with different spatial ability

Wan Ahmad Jaafar Wan Yahaya; Awaatif Ahmad

Past research revealed that students and society, in general, are relatively under-skilled in performing the practice of Islamic funeral management which is one of the “ibadah fardu kifayah” (a legal obligation that must be discharged by the Muslim community as a whole) in Islam. Participation among youth in managing funerals is relatively low, partly due to the ineffectiveness of the instructional approach. This paper aims to examine the effectiveness of the signaling principle in virtual reality courseware pertaining to the topic of Islamic Funeral Management in the Islamic Education subject to ensure the accomplishment of transfer learning among students with different spatial abilities. The study comprises of two phases namely the courseware development phase and treatment phase. The courseware development employs the Instructional Design Model by Alessi and Trollip. Besides that, the courseware is integrated with components of CLE, principles in Theory of CATLM and signaling principle in multimedia l...
