When an Internet user wants to know about a certain topic, the user uses a search engine to find pages related to that topic. However, there are so many pages in World Wide Web that the user cannot access to the pages directly, because most search engines output URLs matching the exact words entered by the user. This paper presents a Interest Hypothesis Discovering System which discovers hypotheses impling users hidden interests. As an application of the system, we show a method to support users expression of interests when the user uses a search engine by offering words related to the hidden interest. The user refines the search condition with words presented to get URLs. n nThis work includes a new modelling of users interest expressions. That is, our discovering system employs a Hypothesis Creation System which creates new hypotheses implying relationships among input words for search. New hypotheses are interpreted as a users hidden interests, which enable the discovering system to present effective new words for the user to search.

Most Internet users use search engines to get information on the WWW. However, users cannot be content with the output of search engines because its hard to express the users own interest as a search query. Therefore, we propose a system which provides users with keywords related to user interest. Users can recall keywords expressing users hidden (not described in a search query) interest as search keywords. The system includes an interface to restructure a part of the users search query. Users can compose a new search query expressing concrete user interest with the interface. Previous refinements are simple modifications of the search queries, for example, adding narrow keywords or relational keywords. However, the restructuring described in the paper includes replacement of the search keywords.

With the widespread use of the Internet in recent years, documents are increasingly handled by electronic means. However, due to physical and time limitations it is difficult to review all of these documents. To allow selection of desired documents, it is useful to prepare a summary representing the content of each document. Consequently, this paper proposes a panoramic view system which extracts important sentences by a unique method. The system surveys the whole text and detects the keywords that express the features of the text. The feature keywords are extracted as words closely related to the main topic of the text and help to extract important relevant sentences.

Social activities are divided into two types. One is a creative activity by the combination of the existing object, and another is an imitative activity by which the created matters settles. Since a creation is realized by the combination of existing knowledge and information, people cannot create new things without thinking about previous works and their proper combinations. This paper proposes a framework for supporting a creative activity by combinations.

Most Internet users use search engines to find information according to their intentions. However, this approach excludes serendipity; that is, opportunities exist on other routes from the most direct. We propose a system to assist Internet surfing which employs a search engine. This system reminds users of potential interest by supplying keywords related to search keywords. As many of words do not follow from the users thought processes, the user can discover words which express their potential interest and find information using these keywords. Associations of the keywords are formed from relationships between newly supplied keywords and newly entered search keywords. Therefore, users can take pleasure in their surfing and follow many unanticipated opportunities.

In this chapter, the criteria for information selection and two-dimensional interfaces for application are presented. We require multi-sided analysis for shrinking enormous amounts of data, and we should understand visualized outputs by intuition for acquiring new ideas. Visualization methods will be heavily relied upon for aiding humans’ comprehension by intuition, and promoting the urge for finding biased outputs. Such a system will provide clues for discovering chances.

Since there are many resources on WWW, it has been natural that we extract available information from them. In this paper, the system which activates us and which makes us creative is proposed. Generally, creative activities are realized by combinations of things which are already existed. Therefore, it will be a bonus for creative activities that the system discovers notable keywords from real Web pages. This discovery of keywords is realized by the combination of keywords extraction method and time information related to each Web page and each keyword. By using this system, users will be made a novel and original creation.

An Internet user who wants to know about a certain topic uses a search engine to find pages related to that topic. However, there are so many pages on the World Wide Web that the user cannot access the pages directly, because most search engines output URLs matching the exact words entered by the user. In addition, even though users use intelligent search techniques, it is difficult to input proper keywords because of lack knowledge or lapse of memory. This paper presents a Support System for User Interest Expression which supplies users with keywords, combining the users interests with information on the WWW, making it possible to input search keywords concretely and precisely.
