Bending Mechanisms in AM30 Alloy Tube Using a Rotary Draw Bender

The wall thickness strain and cross-section ovality of AM30 magnesium alloy tube after bending using a rotary draw bender were tested. Then the deformation mechanisms in the tube wall at different strain position were investigated. The results suggest that the extrados of the bent tube, which is thinning under tension, deforms mainly by dislocation slips, along with a few extension twinning {10-12} [10–11] and double twinning {10-11} + {10-12}. In contrast, the intrados of a bent tube subjected to compression is thickened, which deforms mainly by extension twinning and dislocation slips. The extension twinning leads to a drastic texture change in the tube wall of intrados.
