Lithium niobate offers incredible versatility as a substrate for integrated optics. Researchers have developed an array of new optical devices based on this material, including waveguide structures, electro-optical wavelength filters and polarization controllers, lasers with remarkable properties, nonlinear frequency converters of exceptional efficiency, ultrafast all-optical signal processing devices and single photon sources.

Wavelength- and time-selective channel dropping by sum frequency generation of a 10-GHz channel out of a 4 /spl times/ 10 GHz optical time-division-multiplexed signal has been demonstrated using two fully packaged Ti : PPLN wavelength converters. Less than -15 dB of channel dropping extinction ratio is observed with average (peak) coupled pump power of 100 mW (2 W).

Coherent signal from incoherently cw-pumped singly resonant Ti:LiNbO3 integrated optical parametric oscillators

Carlos Montes; Werner Grundkötter; H. Suche; W. Sohler

In conclusion, at selected wavelengths -determined by the dispersion properties of the waveguide material -SR-IOPOs generate a highly coherent (resonant, long wavelength) signal emission though operated with an incoherent pump. This might allow developing MIR-IOPOs of narrow linewidth output for spectroscopy pumped by low coherence, cheap semiconductor lasers.

The state of the art of integrated optical parametric oscillators with Ti-indiffused waveguides in periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) is reviewed with emphasis on devices for the mid infrared spectral range (2700 nm</spl lambda//sub s.i/<3500 nm).

Mid-Infrared Integrated Optical Parametric Generators and Oscillators with Periodically Poled Ti:LiNbO3 Waveguides

Sergey Orlov; Werner Grundkötter; D. Hofmann; Viktor Quiring; Raimund Ricken; H. Suche; W. Sohler

The state of the art of quasi phase matched integrated optical parametric generators and oscillators is reviewed. The core of these devices is a periodically poled Ti:LiNbO3 waveguide of propagation losses down to 0.03 dB/cm and a length up to 180 mm. These properties enable the development of efficient, tuneable, compact light sources for the mid infrared (2700 nm < λs,i < 3500 nm) spectral range.

Mid-infrared continuous-wave singly resonant optical parametric oscillator with periodically poled Ti:LiNbO/sub 3/ waveguide

D. Hofmann; G. Gschreiber; Werner Grundkötter; Raimund Ricken; W. Sohler

Summary form only given. Singly resonant, quasi-phase-matched integrated optical parametric oscillators (SR-IOPO) are attractive candidates for efficient frequency conversion, continuously tunable in a broad wavelength range. Using annealed proton exchanged waveguides near-infrared devices have been demonstrated with an oscillation threshold of 1.6 W. On the other hand, low-loss Ti:LiNbO/sub 3/ waveguides allow to reduce the threshold considerably. This was recently demonstrated by a mid-infrared device with a doubly resonant configuration. In the contribution the first continuous-wave mid-infrared SR-IOPO with periodically poled Ti:LiNbO/sub 3/ waveguide is reported.

Recent progress achieved with integrated optical devices exploiting quasi-phasematched second order nonlinear interactions in periodically poled Ti:LiNbO3 waveguide structures is reported. Wavelength conversion, parametric amplification, multiplexing, and switching are demonstrated as examples of ultra-fast all-optical signal processing in the 1.5-mum wavelength range for transparent optical networks

W. Sohler; Werner Grundkötter; Jie Hyun Lee; Y.L. Lee; Yoo Hong Min; Viktor Quiring; Raimund Ricken; Hubert Suche; Roland Schiek; Thomas Pertsch; Falk Lederer; Robert Iwanow; George I. Stegeman

Quasi-phasematched second order nonlinear optical interactions in periodically poled Ti:LiNbO/sub 3/ channel waveguides, directional couplers and waveguide arrays are exploited to develop efficient all-optical wavelength converters, parametric amplifiers, time division (de-)multiplexers, and space-, phase-, and polarisation-switches.
