A Discussion of Methods Employed in Analyzing the Impact of Short-Term Entertainment Events

Lawrence S. Davidson; William A. Schaffer

As economists pay increasing attention to short-term entertainment events, it is constructive to evaluate the current methodology employed in studies. This study points out that the basic issue addressed by studies is the difference between what did happen and what might have happened—a difficult subject. Other criticisms are raised concerning definitions employed, the survey technique, the multiplier, and appropriate sampling and statistical techniques.

The Role of Input-Output Models in Regional Impact Analysis

William A. Schaffer

“Impact analysis” is the most frequently suggested use of regional input-output models. This paper outlines approaches to impact analysis used in two studies with which the author has been involved: the Georgia input-output study, and a study of the impact of the Montreal Expos.1 The paper has four parts: an outline of a simple regional model, to establish a starting point; a review of the place of structural change in input-output analysis; a discussion of the development-simulation technique used in Georgia; and, finally, an illustration of impact analysis in Montreal.

General considerations in building regional input--output tables

William A. Schaffer

Abstract This paper contrasts the industry-by-industry accounting scheme used in most survey-based regional input-output tables to the standardized, or commodity-by-industry, format proposed by the United Nations. It outlines and compares the procedures used in the U.S.A. in constructing recent regional tables based on both full and limited surveys and then, more specifically, examines the construction procedures for a commodity-by-industry table in Nova Scotia.
