Journal of The Chemical Society, Chemical Communications | 1972

Kinetics of retro-cyanoethylation of phosphonium salts and the question of phosphole aromaticity

William B. Farnham; Kurt Mislow

Phospholium ion (1) is cleaved by sodium methoxide into 1,2,5-triphenylphosphole and acrylonitrile at a rate substantially greater than that observed for comparable phosphonium ions, a finding which is consistent with significant delocalization of the lone electron pair on phosphorus in phospholes.

Journal of The Chemical Society, Chemical Communications | 1972

Stereochemistry of methanolysis of menthyl S-methyl phenylphosphonothioate

William B. Farnham; Kurt Mislow; Neil S. Mandel; Jerry Donohue

Contrary to expectation, displacement of the thiomethyl group in menthyl S-methyl phenylphosphonothioate by methoxide ion occurs with inversion of configuration at phosphorus.

Journal of The Chemical Society D: Chemical Communications | 1971

The absolute configuration of menthyl methylphosphinate: a reassignment and its stereochemical consequences

William B. Farnham; Roger K. Murray; Kurt Mislow

The absolute configurations of the epimeric menthyl methylphosphinates (1) are the reverse of those previously reported, and the stereochemistry of reactions which depend on (1) for a configurational anchor is reassessed in the light of this finding.

Journal of The Chemical Society D: Chemical Communications | 1971

Stereospecific free-radical addition of menthyl phenylphosphinate to cyclohexene: evidence for retention of configuration at phosphorus

William B. Farnham; Roger K. Murray; Kurt Mislow

In contradistinction to a recent report that the free-radical addition of menthyl methylphosphinate to alkenes proceeds with inversion of configuration at phosphorus, dibenzoyl peroxide-catalysed addition of menthyl phenylphosphinate to cyclohexene occurs with retention of configuration.

Journal of the American Chemical Society | 1970

Stereospecific alkylation of menthyl phenylphosphinate

William B. Farnham; Roger K. Murray; Kurt Mislow

Journal of the American Chemical Society | 1993

A new synthetic approach to poly- and perfluorinated polyethers

Ming H. Hung; William B. Farnham; Andrew Edward Feiring; Shlomo Rozen

Journal of the American Chemical Society | 1975

Synthesis, Chiroptical Properties, and Absolute Configuration of (+)-2,3-Dihydrotriquinacen-2-one. Effect of Rigid Triquinacene Geometry on the Inherently Dissymmetric Chromophore

Leo A. Paquette; William B. Farnham; Steven V. Ley

Efficient synthesis of (-)-triquinacene-2-carboxylic acid

Leo A. Paquette; Steven V. Ley; William B. Farnham
