Developing College Vocabulary: A Content Analysis of Instructional Materials.

Abstract Current research and theory question many of the traditional methods and techniques of teaching vocabulary. Yet textbooks designed to expand the vocabulary levels of post‐secondary learners continue to proliferate. In light of the large number of vocabulary texts available for the college market as well as recent critical findings from research, the investigators undertook a study to determine the content of 55 college vocabulary texts and the extent to which the content was consistent with empirical evidence. Findings of the content analysis are detailed and recommendations to publishers are highlighted.

The Materials of College Reading Instruction: A Critical and Historical Perspective from 50 Years of Content Analysis Research.

Abstract Content analysis research of instructional materials published for the college reading and study‐skills market provides a unique view of the educational practices driving the field for the past 60 years. Hence, this article examines the published content analysis of college reading texts from the vantage of (a) methodology employed by various writers, (b) specific information presented in respective content analyses, and (c) observed trends in content that have been presented since the mid‐1920s.
