Microcomputer Control of Switched Reluctance Motor

Bimal K. Bose; Timothy J. E. Miller; Paul Michael Szczesny; William Hull Bicknell

A microcomputer-based four-quadrant control system of a switched reluctance motor is described. The control was implemented with a speed feedback loop, a torque feedback loop, and both the torque and speed feedback loops combined. In addition the controller incorporates a startup operation, sequencing, and synchronized angle steering control. The angle controller was designed using dedicated digital hardware, whereas the other functions were implemented using an Intel 8751 single-chip microcomputer. The complete control system was tested in the laboratory with a 5-hp drive, and the test results were found to be excellent.

Model for Electromagnetic Actuator With Significant Fringing Using Minimal Fitting Parameters

Ming Lu; Khai D. T. Ngo; Mariano Pablo Filippa; William Hull Bicknell

In a number of electromagnetic actuators, the stator and translator are structured to create highly nonlinear fringing flux to generate force that varies linearly with displacement. Reliable prediction of such force requires an accurate model for the fringing flux. Assuming that saturation is neglected and the fringings are elliptical, a reluctance model for fringing flux is derived that depends on displacement, material properties, and one tuning parameter describing the shape of the ellipse. Fringing-related reluctances are assembled with the reluctances of the regions with linear flux to predict magnetic field, energy, and force. Upon tuning, the force predicted by the model is within 10% of the simulated and measured forces.
