Mental, physical, and social health are closely interwoven and interdependent. Recent research and better understanding of the relationships between mental, physical, and social health indicate that each is crucial to the overall well-being of individuals, societies, and countries. Because mental health and mental disorders have been ignored or neglected in many parts of the world, the reciprocal impacts between physical health and mental health are not readily apparent. Providing treatment in primary care would enable the largest number of people to get easier and faster access to services. Current health personnel should be trained in the essential skills of mental health care, and mental health should be included in health training curricula.

Leading a social work program as a department chairperson is a multidimensional role requiring knowledge and skills that most faculty are unprepared to provide. Given that most universities do not have training programs to assist department chairpersons in assuming their new roles and responsibilities, faculty members must familiarize themselves with the work of department chairpersons and obtain knowledge and skills from other sources. This article provides a discussion of the various roles and responsibilities required of department chairpersons and the leadership skills required to become an effective and successful administrative leader in academia. A self-survey instrument is provided to assist department chairpersons and those aspiring to become academic leaders in assessing their leadership readiness. The article concludes with a discussion of strategic career planning and its role in helping individuals become effective academic leaders.

Abstract In many situations, for individuals that are institutionalized, normal sexual development is disrupted by among other things lack of privacy, gender separated living environment, lack of sex education, and lack of opportunity. Many institutions actively prohibit sexual expression and in other situations passively set the conditions for sexual assault and exploitation. These experiences in many cases have long-lasting and deleterious effects even after people return to the community. Recognizing that all people whatever their circumstances are sexual beings there is a need for explicit institutional policies that provide an atmosphere where sexual expression can be normalized as much as possible while ensuring a safe and supportive environment.

Little empirical research exists that assesses the preparedness of faculty advancing into administrative positions in higher education. This research identifies the leadership skills and responsibilities necessary for the management of academic social work departments and examines the willingness of faculty to advance into leadership positions. The preparedness of administrators to assume such positions is also assessed. Findings indicate a willingness to serve among faculty and administrators. Faculty and academic leaders agree on the importance of a variety of leadership skills and responsibilities. Although most leaders felt they possessed good leadership skills, many reported needing five or more years to acquire the necessary leadership skills for their jobs. Additional preparation in the areas of governance policy interpretation, human resources, financial management, confronting colleagues, and resource acquisition is needed. Experience, on-the-job training, and professional development workshops a...
