The purpose of this research was to evaluate the reduction of the VPI (visible plaque index) and of the GBI (gum bleeding index) in children seen at a unit of SUS, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. A comparative and statistical procedure (t-test, by means of the GMC program) was employed in order to assess the variation between initial and final mean VPI and GBI values. Initial values were registered in the beginning of the assistance program, and final values were registered after the children had participated in health promotion activities, which included weekly supervised brushing sessions, individual dietary guidance, collective instructive activities in which parents were present, adjusting of the oral environment, as well as restorative and surgical dental care, during an average period of six months. The studied sample comprised fourty-two children, with an average age of nine years, who presented an average of four teeth affected by caries. The technique of indirect documentation, by means of documental research, was employed. The following results were obtained: initial VPI = 29%; final VPI = 11%; initial GBI = 13% and final GBI = 5%. The observed variations were statistically significant at the level of 1%, which was revealed by the applied statistical test. The program proved efficient as to plaque control, reducing VPI to a more acceptable level. Although GBI presented considerable reduction, the presence of bleeding at the end of the program calls for a better approach in motivating patients as to regular oral hygiene.

The aim of the present study was determine the prevalence and factors associated with dental caries and periodontal disease in Brazilian children and adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP). This is a cross-sectional study conducted with 80 patients ranging in age from 2 to 18 years old. Oral exams were conducted by an examiner with records of DMFT, dmft, Gingival Bleeding Index (GBI) and Community Periodontal Index (CPI). The statistical analysis used Poisson Regression with robust variance estimation (α = 0.05). The prevalence of dental caries was 59.3%, with DMFT and mean dmft of 1.71 ± 2.42 and 2.22 ± 3.23, respectively. The mean GBI was 22.44%, and in the CPI, the prevalence of gingival bleeding, calculus, shallow and deep pockets were 94.73%, 79.62%, 12.90% and 3.22%, respectively. The caregiver’s educational level of less than eight years were associated with the dental caries experience (PR = 1.439; 95%CI = 1.09–1.89). The periodontal alterations were associated with female sex (PR = 0.82; 95%CI = 0.69–0.97), caregiver’s educational level of less than eight years (PR = 1.15; 95%CI = 1.03–1.29), poor oral perception (PR = 0.89; 95%CI = 0.80–0.98), serious communication problem (PR = 0.87; 95%CI = 0.76–0.99) and athetoid type of CP (PR = 0.85; 95%CI = 0.75–0.97). The patients with CP presented high dental caries experience and periodontal alterations, which were associated with their demographic, socioeconomic, oral health perception and systemic information.

Objective: To evaluate the antifungal activity of Brazilian plant extracts against strains of Candida albicans (ATCC289065) – C1, C. tropicalis (ATCC40042) – C2 and C. krusei (ATCC40147) – C3. Methods: The evaluated Brazilian plat extracts were represented by essential oils from Citrus aurantium (orange), Citrus limmom (lemon), Citrus reticulata (mandarin), Xylopia brasiliensis (pindaiba), Campomanesia xanthocarpa (guabiroba), Ocimum basilicum (basil) and Cymbopogon martinii (palmarosa). The antifungal activity of essential oils was determined by agar diffusion technique. Fungal suspensions (1.5 x 106 organisms/mL) were sowed in Sabouraud Dextrose Agar, over which were distributed discs of sterile paper. The specimens were inundated with 20μL of tested solutions and control in pure formulation. The tests were performed in duplicate and Chlorhexidine Digluconate (0.12%) served as control. The inhibition areas of fungal growth, in millimeters, were measured and analyzed descriptively. Results: For C. aurantium, C. limmom, C. reticulata, X. brasiliensis, C. xanthocarpa, O. basilicum, C. martinii and Chlorhexidine the average of the inhibition zones of growth were, respectively: 14.5, 9.0, 11.5, 11.5, 20.0, 30.0, 40.0, 22.0 (C1), 16.5, 8.0, 10.5, 9.0, 36.0, 44.0, 36.0, 26,0 (C2), and 40.0, 8.0, 10.0, 9.5, 18.0, 34.0, 36.0, 22.0 (C3). Conclusions: All products tested presented antifungal activity, highlighting the essential oils from C. xanthocarpa, O. basilicum and C. martinii, with greatest inhibition zones of fungal growth.
